I need a good riddle, and how do you handle initiative with large groups?

We use index cards.

You write your character's name in the upper left, Dex modifier in the upper right, and roll in the middle.

They're reusable and easy to shuffle around for things like readying and delaying. Only problem is if something sticky gets on the cards, they may stick together. But, after a round, you learn who goes before you and who goes after, so you just say, "Hey! skipped me." Then the GM looks sheepish.

An answer to iether questions would be great. thanks.

I like freeform initiative. Whatever makes sense to happen next happens next.

I also will just go around the room clockwise, starting with whoever won initiative.

I wont call this a masterwork of a riddle, but for some reason stumped my players when they entered a Hag's lair.
I'm sure with the bounty of wordsmiths on the boards it will be solved quickly.

"Answer this once and answer it true or ye will be flavour for my stew.
Just one answer and just for fun, the answer must be a palindrome.
A single answer is what I bade. Now what do you call a dark elf’s blade?"

As for players, I ask them for their results at the beginning of each round and when the turn comes to them, I tell them (usually they know that already, anyways, since I also say, what turn it is, when an NPC acts). I've also seen other DMs writing them down to help with the memorizing.

As for large numbers of NPCs, I divide them into a handful of groups at most, and only roll up one result per group. Only "uniques" always have their own inititiave. For example, if there were 25 Orcs and one Orc Shaman, it would be one roll per group of five orcs and one for the shaman. If there were 15 Orcs plus 5 Orc Seargents and one Orc Chieftain plus one Orc Shaman, I'd just give one result to each of these four groups. Something like that.

We had been having the fighter keep track of initiative, calling out the pc and phase, but now that our group is so large, we actually use an overhead projector so that everyone can read it. Pretty cool actually.
