i need a new laptop

I didn't read through this thread but my one piece of advice would be to avoid Dell. I used to recommend Dell to most people until almost everyone I know who has a Dell (especially laptops) has had some kind of problem with them. This can range from anything to power supplies and power connectors to screens needing to be replaced to complete and utter failure.

Dell quality was excellent 3-4 years ago. They were rock solid.

Now they seem spotty -- some models are great, some are not-so-great. There's no way to tell which will be which in advance, though. :-/

I have found with Dell that they are great if you are dealing with their buisness stuff/tech support and lousy if you are dealing with their consumer stuff/tech support.

As far as the 64 bit stuff it really only comes into its own if you are dealing with really large stuff. Massive amounts of ram (greater than 4gb), huge video files, multi-gig databases, etc... Since very few laptops will even support 4 gb of ram, never mind the 16gb+ ram you need to really start taking advantage of the 64 bit stuff, it is pretty much of a non-issue. I have no idea how big the audio stuff you'll be working with is though.
