$200? Thats insane. IIRC they may have contained a blank PC sheet, a cheap folder and foldable tent to keep in front of the player with stats/tables applicable to the class. Actually, a little more, a shiny red pencil

I think it's because they are super rare now. I guess no one bought them back in the day. Because of the reasons you just listed lol. It's probably why I never bought them when I saw them.

I guess they were somewhat rare even back then? I don't think that I have ever seen one of them here in Italy. In those years, I also used to go fairly often to the US and I would go to gaming stores and I didn't find them (or, maybe, saw them and forgot about them).

I don't recall seeing them all that much either, maybe a few times here and there, but even then it was like one class. So yeah I don't think they were very common unless you bought them when you first came out. There was only 4, the Fighter, Wizard, Thief and Priest packs. They were a novelty more than essential to play the class, but the one my friend had was a good quick reference.

In Wichita, KS one of the big box book stores (possibly Barnes & Noble) carried the entire line, so I don't think they were that rare. That said, they were always in stock and I got the impression that nobody bought them.

It was part of the end of TSR which had been trying to boost sales to players as opposed to DMs which never really materialized. The thought was that for every DM there are a couple players out there that should be marketed to as well. Thing is, the standard 90/10 rule for business doesn't seem to apply whatsoever for games, particularly TTRPGs. There are those of us who hoard everything and probably 10 more who play that own a set of dice and possibly a PHB.

I know they were in the mail order catalogues I used to order from back in the early 90s (because little Växjö didn't have any game store at the time), but I never felt the desire to buy one. They seemed like useless bling to me. Or, would have were I aware of the word "bling".

If you had purchased the set, you’d have been the lord of the blings.

I'll bet it was this:

This was the "intro" set for AD&D, themed on Diablo II. It's a smaller than book-sized box, about the 9X6 you mentioned.
