D&D 5E (2014) I need help with a new campaign D&D 5e

A note of caution- I played in a game with a similar concept. We started in a Gothic setting, moved on to a steam punk setting, then to conventional D&D setting and the changes made it very difficult to develop a satisfying PC. A successful design in one setting turned out to be a complete failure in the next, and since we didn't know what future setting would be, we couldn't plan builds more then a level ahead.

The game folded after level 5 because of player frustration.

So a good lesson learned from this is stay somewhat consistent in the flavour of the different universes. Although I'd think you could still do drastic changes if it's for a short time before returning to the "consistent places."

Now in this campaign I am using the planes from the DMG and plan on keeping him in his own game universe. (So not going to other settings ie Eberron, Forgotten Realms, Greyhawk, Dark Sun )

I like the idea a lot but how would I make this his home base if he keeps plane jumping when he does not want to. I ran a beginning session with the idea with the friend and he will randomly jump and sometimes when he opens a door he acts as a portal key and opens it to another plane. Closing said door changes it back.

Personal opinion, an easy way to make people question what they know is to make them think that humanity extends way further back into history than previously thought. Limbo is great for this in hiding ancient ruins and such, and the Monsters there aren't massive in the CR area. I'd hen concentrate on old ruins and not really dimension swapping (although you could word it in such a way that the PC's thought they were going through different alternate Faeruns) but actually going back in time and discovering at the end it wasn't parallel dimensions.. it was history. BOOM. The under dark is also a great place to mess with if you want to blow fairly new characters mind. (ive got a nuts map of an ancient under dark maze if you want to use it).
