Without our asking you to re-conceptualize all of your ongoing plot ideas that you may already have in place, I think the real hook for you is these hell-hounds. What was the earlier encounter with the other (captured) hellhound all about? Did they slay it or release it? Or just observe it?
I think an interesting way to swing this Fire-giant encounter is, as suggested by Gilladian, that the hounds could recognize somehow that the PCs have met their pack-mate and don't attack them because of this. This gives the giant a reason to not slay the party outright, and opens up a dialog.
