I need yer help!!! QUICK! (please)

Bah. The young kids have it all too easy these days When I started my last 2E campaign, the first monster I threw at the (1st level) PCs was a beholder, and they defeated it fair and square!

One of those annoying, stupid, virtually harmless beholder-kins, to be more precise, but why let the details get in the way of a good story?

Simple is best.

Lots of things for your new players to run around and kill, and don't worry overly if they steamroller simple critters. The trouble with a big critter is that it might kill someone to easily. They're inexperienced they'll get themselves killed. Maybe a low-level caster, kobold sorcerer or the like for a bit of variety!
;)

I'm actually doing something very similar tomorrow, I'm doing a one-on-one with 14-year old who studies English with me.

I agree at least one monster that is in the 'strange' (by D&D standards) category is cool. An owlbear, maybe a carrion crawler, rust monster, etc.

You might also throw at least one or two unusual monsters that they will recognize from myth or legend. Centaurs, satyrs, or the like.
