I really need DM advice!

3 weeks? If it is only 3 more weeks of overall boringness, just grin and bear it. Be a good friend, suffer a few more sessions of boredom, and then once his game ends, start yours.

Three weeks should be easily endured for the sake of friendship!

Have a chat, all of you together, including your DM friend, yourself, the five other players. All together. Then discuss what you want to do next, and try to find common ground together. You know. Relax, talk this over, and try not to take offense when and if you disagree. Try to see everyone's side, and then try to come up with a way all these sides are represented. Like maybe running the game together, or alternating DMing duties, whatever it takes to keep everyone -and I mean everyone- happy, and the channels of communication open, and direct. No talking in the back of other people. That's not cool.

Good luck.

Dropping my vote here for talk about it. I learned early in the military about the positive aspects of counseling and performance appraisals. I was fortunate enough to bring that with me and ask my players on a regular basis, "how am I doing" and "how could it be better", also "what are your expectations?"

So, that being said, when YOU sit at the head of the table, set the example and ask these questions. Maybe you'll learn something about the way you do things that you might improve, as well as prove that it's okay to ask for advice.

Most DMs and new DMs especially have to learn the hard way, because they don't understand that asking for advice is not a bad thing, especially if they have played with a really good DM; one that makes it look easy or natural and appears to have all the answers. So they make mistakes, and suffer in silence.

I know where the majority of my DMing weakness lie due to this method, it really does help if you are objective. I figure you have no problem asking for advice, I mean you asked here didn't you? So, pass on that knowledge to someone "less fortunate?" than you.
