A faux Web site and "commercial" for the "NS-5" robot domestic assistant has gone up as a promotion for the upcoming feature-film version of Isaac Asimov's classic I, Robot collection of stories. I, Robot, starring Will Smith, opens July 2004.

The trailer was aired at the LotR movie last night. I wasn't quite sure what to make of it. It was in the style of a TV commercial and while you knew it was a trailer for a movie, it didn't really (IMO) generate any interest in the movie.

I suppose if I had read any of the "I, Robot" collection my thoughts would be different. At the time, I had no idea what I was watching other than a trailer disguised as a commercial about robots.

I'm gonna have to read the I, Robot stories again, but I have a feeling that the movie is not actually related to the story collection. Instead, it appears to be based on Asimov's "robot detective" novels -- the ones where a human detective and his robot partner solve robot-related crimes. I am thinking of Caves of Steel and ... I think ... one called Naked Sun?? Here's a description of the movie's plot:

The plot sounds somewhat familiar (i.e. did a robot, supposedly unable to harm a human being due to the "three laws of robotics", actually murder a human?) but the names do not sound familiar at all.

I saw the preview, and wasn't sure what to make of it. For a moment I was wondering if they were actually selling some new toy or something. :)
Until they mentioned "three laws safe" or whatever, that's when I finally said "Oh right, I Robot."

Three (or more books kinda). Caves of steel, the Naked Sun, and Robots of Dawn. Of course Asimov ended up tying the robot series into the Foundation series in some of the later stuff, but I abhor those books so I so my best to forget them.

Caves of Steel, etc. were all stories that tied into the "I, Robot" series in one way or another.

But, the movie script plot does not look at all familiar to me. Unless maybe this is the murder that causes Earth to adopt the three laws of robotics.

Actually, that is one of the stories in the book. SPOILER

Its the one where the robot claims to have dreams, and when asked what he sees in the dreams he says he sees robots working, slaving away. Then he says he sees another robot, and he says that the robot says "Let my people go." And when they ask the robot who that robot is, the robot says "Me." At which point they zap the robot and "kill" it.

Edit: Ok, who did that with the spoiler tag?! I try and make it black, realise that its probably a lot simpler than it looks, go to another thread, learn about the nifty spoiler tags and get back here only to discover that some nice person has gone and changed it for me. Thanks but that was a great .5 sec WTF moment.

Heh. Well, up until you edited it, it would have had a little "Last edited by Hypersmurf" notice :)
