I spend way too much on RPG's.

I have actually been aware of this fact for some time. In fact I had already cut back on my spending, such as stopping my Paizo subscriptions last year, etc...

However, after responding to a discussion about RPG costs and how the market is doing at an RPG companies forums, I got to really thinking about it again. In just the last 90 days I have spent over $1,000 on gaming between taking my family to a convention, over $300.00 on the Reaper Kickstarter, to spending nearly $200 on 4 RPG products this past week. Not to mention several other Kickstarters and other products.

None of which I NEED, or needed to do. When you get down to it I haven't needed to buy anything once I bought the core books of the RPG's I like. I don't NEED to buy another single RPG product. Ever. My family and gaming group members can game with what I already own for the next couple of hundred years, with a wide variety of RPG's to choose from.

I think I need to get real, and really responsible, about my RPG spending. I think its time for me to go "cold turkey" and simply stop buying anything. There is nothing out there I truly "need".

I have a lot of thinking to do.

I've been going through something of the same thing, though in my case it's a combination of the post-Gen Con pain in the wallet, and buying my first house, which is going to put all discretionary purchases on the back-burner for a long while.

Spare a thought for me, who also has a boardgaming hobby to feed in addition to all the rpg supplements I've bought...

Cheers!

It took me over 4 decades, but I finally figured that out a year or so ago. I buy very little anymore. Of course, WotC isn't making anything for me to buy, so that helps some. Not that I'm perfect, there are minis coming my way next spring, and plenty of Open Design products. But, eventually, I just looked at all the books I never read, and thought, I don't need to buy more of those.

I had this same thought more than five years ago. Most of my gaming stuff (RPGs, Wargames, miniatures, etc) comes from before that time. I've toned down on my purchases considerably. My last big purchase was the mint condition Greyhawk Ruins module which I bought for about $75 late last spring.

Aside from that, I haven't bought much in the last two or three years--under $150/year I'm sure, mostly on paints and wargaming terrain supplies. I used to spend around $500+ a year.

I think my last big RPG purchase was the 4e core rulebooks--which i got rid of about 4e months later (talk about buyer's remorse).

But it is difficult to go completely cold turkey (but being broke helps). So good luck to you! :)

I quit buying RPGs about 2-3 years ago.

Then I bought board games - all the variant forms of Axis & Allies, Risk, Tide of Iron, Starcraft, the D&D board games, Catan - anything that had toy - er, I mean miniature figures. And I think I've been able to play A&A once and Tide of Iron twice.

Now, Games Workshop has taken over my mortgage. Why are their miniatures so beautiful but their prices soooooo outlandish?

It seems if I'm not feeding one hobby addiction, I'm feeding another. And I really can't seem to stop (not sure I really want to, to be truthful).

Last RPG things I bought were 1E reprints. Before that it was an additional set of used 1E core books. Before that I bought the Pathfinder rulebook, which I did not use. Before that it was the 4E core books which have sat, all but utterly untouched, on my shelf. Before that... had to have been something 3.5... I think it was actually Expedition to Castle Ravenloft, which I really have not used.

I think _I_ may be spending too much on RPG's too.

I stopped buying any and all rpg books earlier this past year. About a year and a half ago, I jumped off the Pathfinder, Mongoose Runequest 2, and 4E D&D treadmills. (I haven't played any rpg games since the summer).

Over the last year or so, the cash I previously allocated every month to buying rpg books, has went into buying dvd/bluray of movies and tv shows. Somewhat less expensive hobby than buying rpg books these days, especially if one goes through the bargain bins of $5 (or less) movies.

In essence, I just replaced one "treadmill" (rpg books) with another "treadmill" (dvd/bluray).

I think I have spent less than 30 dollars on RPGs. I've bought some dice and the old Runequest boxed set. If you need to have some consultation, please PM me. It's really easy though: Just don't buy it.
