I think I know why some of the Dragonspawn didn't make the MMIV gallery...

None of the monsters in Monster Manuals III or IV really grabbed my attention. I can't really see using any of them in my games. Now Monster Manual II had some cool monsters... (regardless of any other flaws some might find in the book).

It looks awkward not because it's unspiderlike, but because you're seeing spider anatomy replicated by reptile parts. In spiders, the head and chest are combined into one segment called the cephalothorax. Behind it, the abdomen segment is a bloated mass of digestive and reproductive organs. It looks like Mr. Swekel used two tails to represent the long spinnerets of a funnelweb spider.

Considering that there have been more than a few spider pictures with legs coming out of the abdomen in D&D, I'd say this one is exceptionally spiderlike. It seems to me that Mr. Swekel knows some things about spiders, and as someone who also knows a thing or two about spiders I like the picture a lot.

Indeed. It might be nitpicky, but I am distinctly pleased to see what seems to be an effort to present the arachnid aspects of the creature's anatomy accurately. Hell, I'm distinctly pleased to see spiderlike creatures given a proper 8 legs, this has me positively ecstatic.
