I thought there was a way using skills to "size someone up" (determine their lvl)...?

Hello everyone,

I seem to remember reading somewhere that there was an alternate use of skills that you could use them to "size someone up". Basically, you used a skill roll of yours vs. thiers and there was a chart that allowed you to determine someone's lvl compared to yours. If I remember correctly it was perhaps Sense Motive vs. Bluff..?

Does this sound familiar to anyone else? If so and you have the chart, could you please post it here so that I can use this in my game I'll be running? Thanks in advance! :)

This first popped up in the Complete Rogue's Handbook back in 2E I believe. It was a skill for the Pickpocket kit. Never cared much for it myself. It was really popular though, just for that one ability.

Sense motive: Characters use this skill in an iaijustsu duel (see Chapter 6) and at other times when they want to appraise the skill of another character (usually an opponent).… In an iaijutsu duel, samurai use the following DCs:

DC Information
15 Opposing character's level
25 Opposing character's total attack and damage bonus with primary weapon

sense motive
new use : combat prediction (paraphrased)
Takes 3 rounds of observing with opponent in sight the whole time. Opponent must be in combat and you can do nothing other than move up to your full movement. DC is 20 +1 for each level your opponent has atttained if succesful your first attack against that opponent is +4 must be taken with in 24 hours.

Only thing that comes close but I don't think it was what you were looking for.
