I want a generic DnD game.

My current DnD campaign (which has been my first DnD campaign since 3.0) is pretty basic. 3 players (2 humans and 1 half-elf). Until the half-elf picked up a level of Battledancer, it was straight classes (wizard/rogue, ranger and cleric). Curently at 10th level, about to kick Gulthias' butt and end the campaign at 12th (game has been going since 2001).

There's an element of people genuinely branching out and trying new and adventurous settings and styles of play; and one of jaded people seeking novelty in gimmicks rather than looking to their own attitudes.

For myself, I like D&D in the mould of the World of Greyhawk or the Forgotten Realms, human and demihuman characters with hearts and ambitions in sword-and-sorcery lands, and for other types of play I go elsewhere than d20.

Depends on what you mean by generic. If by generic you mean kick in the door get their loot, never.

If you mean straight up core rules, every darn time. I run an FR game and my campaign tends to be straight up D&D, core rules and the FR books but that is it. I don't allow Underdark races and nobody plays Genasi or the other plane touched so that works well for my tastes. I don't have chosen of running around stirring the pot and some of the sillier elements are gone too so it is very straight up D&D. I occasionally do a dungeon crawl, but even then it is part of the story and not just a kill the monsters and loot em. I learned VERY early on to always include a story or the players get bored after awhile and hack and slash can be boring to run as a DM.

SO I run general D&D every week and don't use a lot of D20 products, in fact, I sold almost all of my nonWOTC stuff to my FLGS in exchange for the 3.5 books because my 3.0 were falling apart from overuse!

I know what you (the original poster) mean...

I'd love to go back and play good old basic D&D from the red box. I'd love to play an "Elf" and not worry about classes... all Elves are Fighter Mages or didn't you know?

Unfortunately I am the only DM in our group. I have been thinking about showing up to game day with just my red boxed set and a dungeon I'd draw on graph paper. Maybe I'll do just that this week. Then again my group may lynch me for that. ;)

When was the last time you played generic DnD?
In the late 80's ... but we were using Rolemaster. :p

3e got a bit of RM that makes it very enjoyable. I guess when you have so many rules, the DM's authority lessens to that of interpreting the rules, rather making the rules on-the-spot, but that's what you get when the game is still popular and evolves over 30 years.

If by generic we mean 'straight up', rules as they are in the book, well that is my next campaign challenge. I always homebrew, and as part of that I always houserule. Now, I find using someone else's setting trickier than using my own (probably because I remember my own stuff better), but it was suggested that this time I leave off the house rules. Okay, I thought, I can do that.

It's proven harder than I thought. I am a happy games designer (for myself - I have no desire to be a professional), so just saying 'no' was darned difficult! As it is, I have allowed through two things so far: I wanted to use Lizardfolk, so I created a Monster Class for them; and I wanted to try out Action Points, so I borrowed the rules from Unearthed Arcana. But otherwise it's straight up. I hope I can last the course! :) :heh:

I hear you loud and clear. Last week several of our wives got together to have a girls night, watch movies, and stuff. It wasnt a game night but I thought it might be fu to run a simple game on the fly. I dug out my Moldvay Basic and Expert Sets and good old X2 Castle Amber, perhaps my favorite adventure ever, and made a batch of pregens. We played that basic session late into the night and had a blast. For most of my players this was thier first experience with this edition. Playing with those sets brought back some wonderful memories :) I dont know about the rest of the gang but I would love to play some more of that Basic D&D goodness, as a player or DM. I live just south of the N VA area, I might be able to attend the gameday and run some.......................hmmmmmmm
