Go play some Gateway to Apshai. There's nothing quite like getting killed by a nigh-endless variety of slimes and slime molds to bring some of that fear back. Indeed, if D&D monsters were more like those in GtA, I suspect that there would be a lot less fighting and a lot more running away.
