I want some more generic location books

Like the Foul Locals and En Route series from MEG and Atlas. I find them more useful than premade adventures. Any suggestions?

Yes! In the time-honored tradition of pimping material that one has written parts of, have you seen Rooms With a View? (In addition to unknowns like myself, Barsoomcore, a well-known ENWorlder, wrote two entries.)

Edit: Also, even though it's out of print, I suggest Atlas' Backdrops. Came with a map for every locale. Really useful, short, drop-in material.

Er, Sacred Grounds? Seven Citadels?

Erm, maybe just browse around the Atlas section of the RPGnow and RPGshop sites? ;)

I heartily agree, DMH! I get extensive use from locale books. These are also my favorite types of things to write. A shame I have no map making talent or I'd release locales on my own in pdf form. Perhaps I can convince a publisher to do a book of drop-in locations (written by me of course ;)).

Have you tried the World of Whitethorn series, like The Hamlet of Thumble or The Village of Oester? These are very generic, yet fun, adventure settings packed with interesting and quirky NPCs. Each has at least one fully or very well developed settlement, lots of side encounters, and new rules. They're designed to be used as building blocks for a whole world!

I'd also suggest old copies of Judges Guild stuff just for inspiration and some Necromancer Games adventures have settings, too, like The Grey Citadel.

I'm trying to remember if Andrew (the publisher) had a print on demand option. It was originally released as pdf-only. I'll email him. Expect an answer in a couple days.
