I want to start playing Scarred Lands. What books do I need?

I have a slightly different take on the list and think the books should be purchased in this order.

Scarred Lands GM screen
Scarred Lands Campaign Setting
Ghelspad Gazateer
(These books are the ones you need most. Out of the three of them you can drop the Gazateer and not miss that much.)

Divine and Defeated
Relics and Rituals
Creature Collection Revised(When it comes out)
(This trio of books covers everything you really need for Scarred lands flavor)

After this it really depends on your personal taste. I would figure out what type of game you want to run and where you want to run it. If there is a book out for your location I would definetly pick that up. If you aree going to have a lot of traveling in your game you should probably have wilderness and wastelands since it has extensive lists of encounter charts and ways to handle wilderness encounters. Secrets and Societies is wonderfull if you wnat to use any major organizations, and since at least one group is guaranteed to be in any given area it is a very solid buy.

Finally if you want to use Psionics or are using a Magic heavy ggame R&RI2 should be considered essential. It covers Psionics in the Scarred Lands and has a lot of nifty rules and spells for magic in the Scarred Lands.

You may be biased, but it dosen't make you wrong. A lot of people think that Hollowfaust is the best City book out for Scarred Lands and possibly out for D20. It is one very good read.

Hollowfaust is a WONDERFUL book, one of the best d20 city book (Freeport is the other). It brought me to Scarred Lands, and I still think it's one of the most innovative and imaginative RPG books I've found.

Did I say I love Hollowfaust? :D

Well you gotten some very good advice and I agree with a lot of what has been said but...

I would say that the Ghelspad Gazetteer is a must if only for the fold out map, because the SLCS: Ghelspad doesn't have one (the only thing it is lacking IMO) but the gazetteer does. I've always felt that a good map is needed so one can look at the campaign area as a whole, plus I love maps :). The maps in the SLCS: Ghelspad are on the inside covers (both front and back) and are full color but IMO nothing beats a good fold out map, book binding can't hide or distort any area on a fold out.

That is also a weakness of the LLG and the GH gazetteer, the Flaeness maps (though they were fold outs) were not the greatest made (that would be the '83 two poster set, now that is what a campaign map should be!)

Boy we're getting EVERYONE on this one! First Ethan now Jeff! All we need now is Anthony and Joseph and we can start own little book! ;)
