That's a fact! I played a warrior up through tier 4, some tier 5 content and had total lifetime PvP kills of < 100. You just CAN'T PvP effectively with Prot spec/gear. It would have been fun to get into PvP such that enemy players were forced to deal with my toon's raid buffed 16K armor and 22K health. Oh, well.

I still want to see a striker Pally in 4e! Hopefully the smite powers will make it possible to really lay the pain on critters with a paladin. The vision of a fully armored and crazy damage buffed paladin laying the holy hurt on enemies just sounds fun.

You want holy smack down? Go protection AoE grind spec. There's nothing like ending a fight with 6-10 mobs with full health and mana. Talk about power leveling, sheesh.

And as for striker paladins, you can't. They're defenders. I don't know why people think you can make a class into something it's not. Paladin = defender. Paladin =/= striker, controller, or leader. You spec might enhance things that are already built into the class, but you're not gaining striker abilities w/o multiclassing.

No monthly fees required to play!

No, just monthly fees to get all the latest content, articles, additional classes, magic items, adventures, monsters, races, etc. (i.e. DDI).

How is this any different from being "forced" to buy all the books if you want all the content? In fact, it's cheaper to go DDI if you want access to everything.

I tried Vanguard... I wasn't impressed.

Earlier in the thread someone posted a Rogue(Paladin) build through 16 levels, it looked amusing if nothing else. Personally I'd build a "Ret Pally" as a Rogue(Cleric) because you want a splash of quasi-healiness with a damage-focused character. Seems to me that might be the better way of doing it.
