I would really like a return of the old Bard class.
How would the people who want a "songs only" bard feel about something like the following. You pick a spell effect, from any class that mirrors a bardic power and makes sense as a buff. That is your "spell" for that level. You only have a very limited selection of them. In return for this, you can access any spells that make sense. So your "spell list" might look like this: 1. "Selo's Marching Tune" Longstrider 2. "Starcrossed Lovers Lament" Charm 3. "Selo's Song of Celerity" Haste 4. "Aria of Healing" Beacon of Healing (? the AE heal) Just using the same mechanics for songs as spells keeps things simple to balance. It is likely a bit underpowered (compared to other bards, not mere mortals), but allowing the bard to use spell-points when you don't for other classes might make it feel mechanically different and add in a little more flexibility. <edit> I feel like a bards specialty should be area effect spells and buffs. Things like haste only hit the one person. What about allowing a bard to cast the same concentration spell again, and tie it to the first spell, allowing them to keep maintaining concentration on the same spell on multiple people. It breaks if they do another different song. So you could haste/fly/invisibility 3 people at the same time if you have the spell slots for it. In some cases, like flight, the duration of all existing flight spells gets refreshed when you recast it. It means the bard has to keep singing their song, if they talk, or cast any other spells or song they break. I think that could be pretty cool.
