Am I the only one on these boards that just doesn't see the appeal of Cthulhu?

I just don't get it.

I'm not sure there is anything to get. It's like a long running gag. I guess he is a bit iconic and does havea long history in RPGs. It's a geek thing I imagine.

In his house at R'lyeh dead Cthulhu waits dreaming.

That is not dead which can eternal lie, and with strange aeons even death may die.

"Getting it" is not necessary. You too shall be consumed.

Y'know, I've seen a rash of mispellings of Cthulhu on the boards lately -- it's almost as if his name never had that second 'h' after all...

Make San check, 1/1d10...

Out of curiosity: Which came first, the Mind Flayer or Cthulhu?
Seriously?

Lovecraft died in 1937, and the Cthulhu stories were mostly written in the 20s. Mind-flayers were written for D&D, which makes the absolute earliest they could have come out 1974, but quite probably it was a few years after that. There's more than 50 years between them.
