[IC] Come, Consult the Oracle

"Greetings, Mr. Oracle."

"Tell me what you know about something random. I shall then tell you what I know of it."

"It will be a fun game, we shall see if our knowledge is similar. I know many things, though I do not pretend to know the future."

"Ah, I'm afraid you misunderstand me. The answers I give are far from random and hold meaning to those who listen. This game of yours is not something I would be interested in. If you seek wisdom, though, then I can help"

A man reaches the pillars. He sits nearby, and watches the oracle for some time, as if he couldn't resolve himself to asking his question. "They say the oracle knows all about the life of a man", Kerall says to himself. "But what about that which comes after?"

Eventually, he stands up and strides to Uziel, before having time to change his mind again. "Greetings, oracle. I have come for a very simple question, which yet has been troubling me for some time. Who will claim my soul, when my time comes? Will I join my loved ones among the skies, or am I doomed to the abyss?"

OOC: This thread contains the reasons behind Kerall's question.

The blind man wheels his head toward Kerall.

"You have much on your mind...and your soul. Please sit. "

Uziel proceeds to sit on the other mat, crumble some leaves into the pit and a column of foul smelling black smoke begins to rise. Uziel begins to hum deeply and it is some time before he speaks again.

Then....

*FLASH*

A bright flash radiates from the pit and the smoke ceases. Uziel comes out of his trance looking dazed and drained.

"That's...never happened before. It would seem that the strands that guide your fate have long been cut. Whatever has happened in your past it has caused you to be free of the cycle that governs men. Very odd. It seems your future is yours alone.

However, I can give you some friendly advice. A man's soul is judged not only by his actions but his intent. No action exists in a vacuum. Your unique position allows you much freedom but at an equal risk of peril. Defeat the Light and you shall fall into the abyss. Defeat the Dark and you soul shall rise to the heavens. Choose your battles carefully, Kerall, for they will decide the final home of your spirit."

He looks thoughtful for a moment then says, " You interest me a great deal...would you not speak more of yourself?"

Kerall is left mouth-open by the Oracle's revelation. After a few seconds, he looks around carefully to see if they are alone, and then starts speaking:

"I'll try to be short. The memories are painful, but thanks to the friends who helped me, the wounds are now healing. I used to live in a far, far away land. There was a plague, and my wife perished. When my daughter contracted the disease, too, I entered a pact with a devil. He wanted my soul and my honor, and then told me that he would keep Maelle free of the disease as long as I kept fighting and winning, so that I would have time to search for a cure. After months, every sage told me that there was no cure, so I could just keep on fighting forever".

"When in my land there was noone left to fight, I left. I arrived here, but the challenges proved much harder. I spared no dirty trick to win, but yet I could barely gain a few days to Maelle. In the end, I reached the point where one more loss would mean the death of my daughter - and probably mine, too. The fiend appeared to tell me so right after a fight I had with the noble Nikodemus. Upon hearing it, I fell crying, and the noble warrior who had just defeated me came to my help".

"We have talked for long, and as we were talking more warriors of Honor came to that place. When the fiend appeared again, I threw my kama at it, but it just passed through its body. Sabaron picked up the weapon, and Nikodemus attempted to cleanse it with his Redeeming Light, and when he did so, the steel crumbled to dust! And slowly, I felt free of the dark influence that clouded my mind and made me follow the ways of evil".

"I realized that I should have let Maelle die, no matter how painful it was for me, because such was the will of Fate. And so, I refused to fight again, and she passed on, surely headed to Heaven to stay forever with her mother".

"But I was still alive, and still bound by the infernal contract, or so I thought. My soul was doomed to serve the fiend in hell, and there was nothing I could do to change that. Nikodemus, though, had received an offer from the celestial Archangel: for his noble deeds, he would be taken to Heaven while he was still alive. The light warrior, and every day I bless him for his altruism, told me that he would pass this gift to me, so that when my time came and my soul went trapped in Hell, Archangel would come and free me".

"I could not accept. I had already tried to cheat fate, and the result was horrible. I would not do it again - especially stealing Heaven from another! I decided to accept the consequences of my actions, to live my life, and see what will happen at the end of it. Nikodemus had a theory: he said that the pact stated that Maelle was to be kept alive as long as I fought, and that no mention of my soul was made here. Since the fiend didn't give you anything for your soul, he said, you are free to take it back".

"I thought you could give me an answer, but you gave me another mystery instead".

"The answers we seek are not always the ones we get. I cannot control what come forth, only pass it on. "

"Perhaps the answer is in what the Archangel said...you are free to take back your soul. So it seems you may win your soul back, but not without effort..."

OOC: I read your other post before I gave my answer, but I wanted you to mention your history for IC reasons.

"That, in itself, is a great relief. Thank you for sharing your wisdom, Uziel".

Kerall goes away, to his next fight, to reclaim his honor.
