Dellrak set off at a brisk pace, with Wulf behind him. They were followed not far behind by Harb and Chrysagon, with Weed skipping along just behind them.(Though it was clear he was struggling to keep up, with his little legs.) The second group was led by Rodrigo and Qawasha, and followed by Miss Imogen and Tarri. Kasqa had taken the rear to help his wife, but he was struggling as well. Through no fault of their own, the second group was beset with worse obstacles than the first, as mud and loose rock washed over the trail before them. An hour in, the two groups were split by a distance of a few hundred yards. An hour more and the distance had doubled. This was when two events occurred at nearly the same time. Dellrak and Wulf were rounding an outcropping of solid rock when they very nearly ran into a Pterafolk. The creature was perched just to the side of the trail, dangling its wings off of the cliff to allow the rain to run off them, with its long-beaked face drooped low. Perhaps it had been sleeping that way. At any rate, they had startled it and it spread its wings -- a span of twenty feet -- and leapt off of the cliff with a cry. It was gone very quickly, diving low and circling around the arc of the cliff face and out of sight. The other group had worse trouble. They were crossing a bit of the trail where mud had washed across and it was very slippery, when a large rock from the cliff above fell loose. It struck the mud-path and slid, scattering the group, then plunged off of the cliff to a long fall where it landed in the depression that had been the campsite of the night before. When the chaos ended it was discovered that Tarri had disappeared in the scramble. After a moment of panic she was found, having fallen a short distance to a ledge. Miss Imogen and Kasqa climbed down to her while Rodrigo and Qawasha held the rope, and she was rescued, but she was muddy, bloody, and exhausted by the time they neared the top of the cliff. By then, the sun was low in the west, and the cliff (which faced east) was deep in shadow. The first group had made it to the top and were watching the trail for the second group, while also watching the skies for any sign of the Pterafolk. [ooc]Let's get a perception roll from everyone. Everyone in the second group has disadvantage (you are still down the trail a short way and your vision is blocked by the cliff). Normally I'd go the other way and give advantage to the people on look-out, but not this time.[/ooc]
