Qawasha scooped Ussal and Imogen up in his bag and began to climb a support beam for one of the balconies. When he saw what they would do, the Clay Baby nodded and waved and the Straw Girl said, "You better hide! We'll try to distract them for you!" It wasn't long before a woman appeared, as if from nowhere. Even stooped over, she was tall - eight feet or more at the shoulder. In between the black goat-horns of her head was an ant's nest, and ants crawled down her face and along her shoulders. She wore a tattered black robe with a rope-belt, upon which was a ring of iron keys. As soon as she materialized, she began to cough. "'Who left da pot a-boiling?" she said testily before snapping her fingers, and the cauldron stopped spewing green smoke. "Joho! Mama's here, ya cheeky monkey. Come an' take me boots off!" She slumped into one of the rocking chairs and the stuffed monkey wheeled over slowly on his one-wheel and began to pull at one of her boots while the faceless clay baby and the straw girl stood nearby, nervously shuffling their feet. Ants trailed down onto the floor and began to cross the room toward the cage. As the rocking chair leaned back, the Hag nearly looked toward Qawasha, who was still finding a spot to hide. The Straw Girl squeaked and the Hag shot her a glare as the doll stammered, "W-we could help him with your b-boots, Widow Groat! Would that b-be okay?" The Hag nodded, "Why not? Ye've naught t'do until me sisters return." Widow Groat leaned back and closed her yellow eyes while the dolls struggled to remove her long, twisted-looking boots.
