Kennewick looks up from his book in small surprise. Glancing in Mischa's direction, he smiles and pulls his spectacles off and takes Kaufman's hand. With a slight stutter and a noticable gnomish accent, he greets the goblin cordially, "Well, I- uh, thank you - I mean, hello. Welcome. Welcome everyone."

The gnome puts his things away and pulls a stool up for Kaufman, "Sit, sit. It's been a while since I've spoken with a learned goblin such as yourself."

After making a circuit of the room shaking hands and greetings in polite fashion Kaufman returned to sit upon the stoll as offered by the gnome.

"You look a learned man yerself" he grinned in reply to the gnome glancing, as he did so, at the titles of the books piled before him.
"and what, may I ask, is the purpose of that board and its grid?" he asks pointing to the curious item.

(ooc so a general idea of the titles of the books and the subject matter they might cover?...

oh and did I pick up any interesting gossip?)

OOC: Maddmic, I'm sorry to hear that. :( Oh well, how about we say that your character introduces himself to everyone as Frem Peridoc, another fellow looking to start out a new life. For now, we'll say that he's quiet, and politely listens to everyone else speak due to the fatigue of travel. After a while, we can simply say that he'll take a nap, would that be all right?

Kennewick smiles in response to Kaufman saying that he looks rather learned himself. He sits up a little straighter, his confidence returning.

Arrayed in a few short piles are Kennewick's books, all written in gnomish: Economic Sophisms, and Freedom for the People are most prominent -- as Kaufman seems to remember a pair of Askaran philosophers arguing about them on a short ferry ride in the Imperial capital city of Illumina ((A good Bardic Knowledge roll)). In addition to the gnomish books on accounting, ecnomics, and political philosophy, there is another stack devoted to a collection of boardgames and cardgames of the various peoples of the continent. Finally, there's a smaller stack amidst the pile written in Imperial Common detailing property laws, criminal law, and banking practices.

The gnome taps the sturdy wood of the board and picks one of the pouches up and unties its leather string, "This is a game I discovered on a trip to Haravia with my fellows. It's a Meyarin war game, War Stones they call it. Two players, each one puts a stone down on one of the points in turn -- one after the other. The point of the game is to secure as much free territory as possible without being surrounded by your enemy. It's easy to learn, and very difficult to master."

Kennewick hands the bag of black stones to Kaufman, "I could teach you to play if you like," he smiles, "it's not like we don't have the time."

((War Stones is simply another name that I've given the real world game of Go, or Goh, or Baduk. It's a very old Asian game, and there should be a lot of websites devoted to it. If you're interested.))

Nolan smiles as he collects the cards and starts shuffling with an astonishing expertise. "I'm not much for that whole 'new life' thing, friend. My life is my life, it's pretty much the same wherever I go."

((It doesn't look like Nolan's cheating -- at least, not now.))

As Mischa shakes the dwarf's hand and nods in greeting, Nolan calls Brenodan over, "You still playing big guy? We have another seat open."

Tweek shrugged, "It took 'em tha betta part of a day to get out of Taebrook to get here... I 'spect it'll take dat long too." He sat down at the table and tossed a gold piece on the table, "Gimme some chips, Kelly."

Kelly nodded and opened a long and shallow box, he pulled out a stack of black, blue and red wooden chips. The younger Blackwater brother glanced at everyone there and said, "The red ones are one silver, the blue ones are five copper, and the black ones are one copper." He gives Tweek two red chips, ten blue chips, and thirty black chips, "The ante's two black chips. We're playing seven card."

Mischa turned his head and nodded respectively, "Good to meet you, Brenodan. What brings you here, on the long road to Port Opal? The promise of a career with the Opal Militia perhaps?"

Nolan turns in his seat again and says, "We still have a seat open here, sir dwarf. Would you like to play?"

"Yes, yes" Kaufman takes the stones and an interest in the game
"I'd be happy to learn from you." he continues "and only hope I am a worthy student."

As the gnome sets things up Kaufman watches and listens in to the different conversations happening around him.
"So you all came from Taebrook?" he begins to chat with Kenniwick "so what did you do there?"

Kennewick shrugs, "Well, not exactly. I'm from Guelphia City, Tweek and the Blackwater boys are from Illumina. I think Haley and Moira are from Taebrook, but I'm not sure where Mischa's from..."

The gnome opens a book written in gnomish, it's pages have pictures of the War Stones board with board positions and what-not on them. "All right, since you're new, we'll put five stones down as a handicap. Put a black stone in the middle, and one each on the four mid-points around the center," Kennewick points to each place for Kaufman to put his stones.

"We'll play a simple game to begin. To win, all you have to do is capture one of my stones, and likewise for me. To capture one of my stones, you have to surround it: one above, one below, one left, and one right. Diagonal connections don't count, and you can try to capture a lot of them by cutting off a group from all open spaces."

Kennewick places his first white stone, "Your turn." He watches as Kaufman places his sixth stone and nods, "But yeah, we all ended up meeting in Taebrook. Moira had brought Mischa home to meet her parents. At that point, I was still working with an old jeweller friend of mine as a clerk. I bumped into the Blackwater Boys while playing in a chess tournament, it was quite fun -- Nolan almost had a chance of beating me."

The gnome smiled mischievously as Nolan glared at him in silence. "We ended up talking about things and he introduced me to Mischa through Tweek. A few hours after that, I ended my stay with Whiteraft Jewellers and threw my lot in with Mischa and everyone."

((Kaufman: Roll an Intelligence Check with a +5 circumstance bonus; Kennewick will do the same for an opposed check. The disparity between the low and high number will determine how long the game will take... Kennewick rolls a total of 20 -- he clearly has a Knowledge (Games) skill...))

Tweek frowns as Mongrés hesitates, "You don't wanna play?"

Haley smiles, "Oh, I'm not nearly as interesting. I was involved with a small troupe of entertainers centered in Taebrook with Moira until she met Mischa and coerced me into leaving with her. It's been fun, but I'm not looking forward to this long journey in such cramped quarters..."

Marec muses aloud while he antes up and waits for the deal, "So you're all travelling together by choice? I woud'na picked it, you're a pretty mixed bunch. What are all your plans when we get there then?"

"Militia? Hmmm, hadn't given it too much thought yet actually. But I suppose that I could put my skills to use in a group like that," Brenodan answers Mischa. "Thanks fer the idea, my friend."

He then turns to Nolan. "Aye. Ain't much of a traveler meself, and I ain't too fond o' boats. Might as well do somethin' to occupy me mind."

Brenodan sits down at the table and nods at the other players. "What're we playin'?"

"Me not very good at games," says Mongres. "Besides we be leaving shore soon. I want to see homeland for last time. Hellhounds know how long before we be seeing land again."

After wrapping up his immediate conversation with Haley by inquiring about the small troupe of actors, Tobius changes his perch to be facing towards most of the action occuring the room. He basically lets the flow of conversation swell around him.

He does nod to Mongres on this last comment, though, and ponder out loud.

"You're right about that. It will be a long voyage, especially below decks. I can only wonder what sort of ... excitement will ensue once people bore of card games and the like."

Tobius appears to be seriously considering this proposition, not maligning the ongoing games.
