Pathfinder 1E [IC] - TIDERULER OF MARAN

"Hmmm, as I understood the power of the dagger, it will not call just any soul. You can call those already shackled to help you. So, unless your kin used or was slain by The Enslaver, I don't think you can do as you want. But I may be wrong, of course."
Marius tries to recall or understand how calling would work on something or someone unrelated to the dagger.

“I ain’t nae priest, either,” Morgrym muttered. “I’m jus’ a shepherd.” He glanced around at the others. “Is there a way t’ destroy this Tideruler once an’ f’r all if we get our ‘ands on it?” he asked. “Save Maran, banish wotever evil decides t’ crawl oot, an’ destroy it?”

Morgrym reached inside his armor and pulled out the Enslaver slowly, watching Dram closely, prepared to stop the man if he must.

At the chance of failure, Dram seems disappointed.

"We shouldn't worry about it now." - he dismisses the question. "We need to focus on the Tideruler and the impending conflict at our doorsteps."

Marius attempts to muster whatever knowledge he collected. As far as he understands, the device works as a caller of sorts, allowing gates to be opened, even beyond planes. The user might choose to call on something that belongs to him, or he might decide to follow that which belongs to him. Anything, from something owned to someone sworn to serve, can be called. The downside is that the caller has to offer his own blood to the dagger, becoming enthralled by it.

Dram remains focused on the conversation, respecting Morgrym's pacing and attitudes. He makes no attempts to reach for the dagger.

"I assume the Tideruler can be destroyed the same way the dagger can go. It involves its own degree of toil to be done, but I believe it to be possible... If we can find our way back to old legends, that is."

"My hypothesis is that, if the Wyrmsforge brought the Tideruler forth, it may as well destroy it. But, since it was lost, we will have to resort to more restricted means of uncovering its location, a task not entirely different than that of finding an heir to the Tideruler." - he concludes, pensive.

“Och. Yet one more impossible task,” Morgrym grunted. “Find a mythical forge tae destroy a mythical artifact, with th’aid o’ some mythical descendent, none o’ which might actually exist. All we know tha’ exists is this dagger. Sounds like a bluidy fairy tale. Whole lot o’ guid tha’ information does us f’r ‘andin’ over the dagger. An’ jus’ ‘ow are we s’posed t’ find all this?”

"Very well, master Dram. Let's hear what you know and we'll tell you what we know. We can compare the notes and agree on the next steps."

OOC: Marius is willing to share everything they glimpsed from the Gardener (without revealing the source). Same goes for Vradna (I need to destroy that 'non-evil' vampiric thing) knowledge and those sarcophagi under Maran. He would NOT describe the tombs or give away their location just in case Dram gets tempted into releasing the guardians.

Dram smiles an odd, sincere and sower smile.

"Fairy tale... You haven't had the start of it." - he shakes his head, as if leaving a memory aside, and continues.

"Either way, there are a few solutions to our momentary problem, I think. The most obvious one lies at the heart of the continent, between the Pillars of Creation. The gnomes have access to a library that supposedly contains all worldly knowledge contained in its pages. There, I believe, we could find leads to where the forge is, as well as the location of the members of such bloodlines. But we must find access to the library first, either by convincing the gnomes to grant it or by forcing our entry."

"The other solution lies with the Blood Witches of northern Gaelia. From what I know, they served under the very last dragons of Gaelia. If anyone kept record of such legacy, it's them."

MARIUS

"Very well, master Dram. Let's hear what you know and we'll tell you what we know. We can compare the notes and agree on the next steps."

He listens with patience and respect for the monk's interjection. After a long, heavy breath, he begins to describe his discoveries.

"As far as I understand, the dagger and the Tideruler are opposite devices, even though they complement themselves in a strange way. The oldest remarks about the Enslaver were handed down to us by small remnants of the Willing and their past civilization. It seems they were the first to bring the thing into this plane of existence - even though they might have believed they created it at first. It's hard for me to determine how they got involved precisely, since most of their accomplishments were destroyed by the Holy Storm of Fire, perpetrated by the dragons."

"After that, the dragons themselves became dominant over the continent, according to the story. They had power over the Enslaver, but refused to use it, for the most part. Apparently, though, some of them managed to get their hands on it, as you yourselves just reported" - he alludes to the wyvern, not fully knowledgeable of the circumstances of its demise. "They gave rise to many nations, mostly conceived at their image and semblance. Their history is hard to uncover as well. What little I could gather came from yuan-ti sages of Ashir and the southern islands, and as you can imagine is not very reliable. But if there's truth to the records, the older races were betrayed by the fearful dragons, and war broke loose around Gaelia. To unify the continent and pacify the lands, four of the ancestral beasts created the Tideruler, dominion of the Living Seas, and linked the artifact to a few select bloodlines that would rule over Gaelia in alternating cycles." - he pauses, emptying the goblet once more and refilling it automatically.

"The peace didn't last. For reasons unknown - at least to me, two of the chosen rulers decided to fight for the Tideruler, bringing their protector dragons into the fight. I believe your order depicts the event as the cause for its foundation" - he points at Marius - "although that is debatable. The stories I heard are very similar, but they don't confirm each other completely. From a knight of your order I heard the tale that depicts a dark dragon defeated by a golden beast and a knight... Is that correct? I heard from an old Yuan-ti scholar a similar tale, even though it spoke of the golden beast as a greedy creature that banned the black dragon to a plane beyond anyone's reach, where he died. A lamia matron - one of the few I could locate - once told me a similar story, but she mentioned that the black dragon could not be killed, not even beyond this realm. None of them spoke of the scaleless - as they are used to allude to men."

He drinks avidly, excited to be speaking of such discoveries.

"And now comes the part that interests us. The Enslaver was, at some point, locked away by the dragons, placed under careful balance. All parts involved decided to leave it be. As for the Tideruler, it never saw use. The conflict broke, ended and the dragons hid it away, in a place that only the dagger could reveal. As for the dagger, it became protected by a peculiar contraption: an enchantment would eat away the will of those that wanted the blade, making them cease their attempts to reach it. The surviving factions abandoned the struggle, agreeing to make peace for as long as the dagger stayed untouched. And it did remain - until Grontar found a way to retrieve the cursed thing."

"I believe that his actions brought about every faction interest either in the blade or the Tideruler. And more will come, no doubt. But at every turn I see misdirection eluded us, and I'm beginning to understand that Grontar might have used us - or perhaps he has been used all this time, without knowledge. I can't be sure of many things, not until I verify many of them, but that will have to wait. I can try a wild guess, though: what that city in the desert brought back might have something to do with your black dragon" - he motions with the goblet towards Marius, right before gulping it vigorously - "...and what's stirring in your mountains is certain to be involved as well" - he points towards Morgrym, serving himself another round.

"You've mentioned the 'Willing' before," Shayuri says, "But I'm unfamiliar with the term. What do you mean by the 'Willing?' and how do they fit into all this?"

"They are a race...or perhaps a subrace of the civilisation that came before us." Marius explains "They are guardians, defenders, eternal, undying, relentless warriors and not easily withdrawn once you unleash them onto the world."

Dram seems impressed at this sudden display of knowledge. His gaze, as well as the slowing pace of his drinking, suggest something more.

"Yes... I am inclined to believe in the second option, though. Almost nothing remains of them, except for the location of a few stone cities, buried under the land, and some vaults, carefully hidden to retain some of their secrets. The stories are somewhat vague at this point, as well. Some believe these precursors were the living embodiment of knowledge and wisdom, while others believe they controlled profane powers and committed great sacrileges in the pursuit of their ambitions." - he drinks slowly, but largely, once more.

"The dragons came either to correct their wrongs and purify the land or to enviously destroy the magnitude of their accomplishments. To such fatalists, the dragons might have come from a land in the distant west, another continent entirely, and when all was done they returned to their ancestral land. No one knows for sure. Every explorer I met - Willem White, the Queen of the Darktides - none knew of such a place."

He then turns to Shayuri.

"If the old chronicles on the topic are to be believed, the Willing - and whatever race or nation they belonged to - commanded shape-shifting powers, giving each and every single member of their... coterie... a unique set of qualities. Dragons were somewhat similar, but philosophical discrepancies would place each of the groups at one side of a conflict - the one that ended with the Rain of Fire." - he pauses, and after some consideration extends an invitation to the companions. Now he stopped drinking altogether.

"Either way, I believe you are tired." - he smiles gently as he shares his renewed welcomes."Time is surely against us, but you must rest before any other measures are taken. Besides, I might as well leave you to consider how to best tend to my end of the bargain. I believe I have told you all I know. If you have any further questions, I'll be in my laboratory. In the meantime, I have ordered the guest rooms prepared for you. Feel free to use the premises as you see fit. A car will be ready if you want to descend to the valley, as well. Call me whenever you are ready. I'll keep you informed as to the developments outside our domains." - with this, he rises, decided to leave the companions to their own debate. He holds briefly, as if to know if anyone still has any questions left, before departing from the room.

[Ok, you are free to do as you wish. Remember, though, that the reptilian soldiers move around as you stay here. You are in control of your time, direction and decisions. You still have four hours till the sun rises - roughly 2 A.M., nearly two-thirds into the Complines - since you traveled during the night towards Dram's manor - I assume you started right after 7 A.M. - a third past Sunset hour.]
