I'm very curious about how often iconic D&D monsters actually get used. IMO, iconic monsters should be used fairly often, and I have a feeling that many of them are not seeing much air time. So, I'm creating a series of polls about iconic monsters and how often they see use.

First off is the Aboleth. As a DM, in the past, how many encounters have you created or played or used using an Aboleth? As a Player, how often have you encountered an Aboleth?

((Sorry for the wordy question, but I'm trying to keep the pedantry to a minimum))

I used them extensively in my first 3E campaign which was a variant of a Night Below. I also used them in another campaign set in FR's Silver Marches where an aboleth was first met when the party were only 3rd level but they met it again when they were nearly 20th level... and suddenly realised that they had been manipulated by the aboleth for a whole year of real time!

I'm about to use the XPH version of aboleths in my new FR campaign and am really looking forward to it as I think they are the most interesting (aka deadly) version yet.

Love 'em.

I used an Aboleth as the recurring villain in an 8 scenario game I ran last year. Went very well it did too; lots of mind controlled shopkeepers and cultists in a small town - the PCs were convince it was a vampire right up until the 6th scenario. Here they were ladened down with garlic, crosses and a buffed up cleric when they caught sight of it's massive bulk in the undergound lake as it broke water.

BOY did they ever run!

Hahahahahaha...., etc.

As a DM I use them as often as I can, which is not that often. If you go into an underdarkish area in a campaign I run, you will likely encounter one.

I just included one as a prisoner of a rakshasa in my game recently. Only time I've ever used or as a DM and I've never seen one as a player. I was in a game where other PCs had fought one in a game where I was not there, but that is the closest it has come.

Never have, never will.

Falls into the "silly" category for me, which is the most damning word I have for such creatures.
