Never used one and have never encountered one.

I have never thought of an Aboleth as an Iconic D&D monster.
It is almost silly as a monster to me.

Yeah, MMII.

I guess I'm a grumpy old grognard. But IMO, if something comes from a book with a number (greater than 1) after it, then it ain't iconic.

FWIW, I voted 0 times ever.

Wow... some of these numbers in the polls on beholder, displacer beast and aboleth are real eye-openers. I've always thought people were playing a different game than I do but this really nails it - you people really ARE playing a different game.

I'd guess 7-8 times- I know I ran Dwellers in the Forbidden City at least twice, and not so long ago there was an advanced aboleth who kept taunting a pc from afar... yeah, I think 7-8 altogether.

There is also an article in Dragon 131 that covers more powerful forms.

Used it in D&D, never. Used it as an alien in other games, any chance I get. It is, by a longshot, my absolute favorite creature in D&D. Consuming memories, skum, and more mythos-ish than illithids and super intelligent, they are just so cool.

Used one a few months ago. The party was adventuring through the ruins of Castle Greyhawk and came upon a cult of dark creepers and dark stalkers that worshipped an aboleth as a sort of water god. The party drove off/killed most of the cultists, killed the aboleth's skum guards, then proceeded to soundly defeat the aboleth.... in 3 whole rounds. Damn blindness/deafness.

On the bright side, since the aboleth managed to escape, I can have it return in a future adventure to harass the players. :)

That has been the only time I've DMed or seen an aboleth used.

I love Aboleths, but haven't used one yet.

Since I was first exposed to D&D in 3e, it was the first monster I ever read about, and I still think it's one of the coolest aberrations ever made. I've been easily the most vocal proponent of an Aboleth miniature on the DDM boards, and I've planned out several awesome Aboleth encounters.

Currently, though, they're not in-theme for my campaigns, and they're too cool to just throw in somewhere, so I'm waiting to use them. Hopefully, WotC will reveal the existence of one in their next Huge set just in time for me to use one.

(also, was there -ever- an Aboleth miniature made for anything ever? Reaper's never made one, and I don't think Ral Partha did.)
