ICV2's Quartley Report on Games is out

ICV2 has posted a summary of their most recent guide to games here.

It notes game retailers are doing better this year than last. An interesting tidbit is that the give some credit for this from a reduced competition, since so many game retailers went out of business.

Of note in the roleplaying category:

The decline in the sales of roleplaying games, which began in 2003 and has been most recently marked by the recent cancellation of Dragon and Dungeon magazines, is the dark spot in the games industry, and it shows no sign of reversing. Many retailers that have successfully adapted to this new environment have not only rotated their product mix away from RPGs, they are also targeting a different, broader audience that includes more families. Not only does a strategy that focuses more on family games offer products that are growing instead of declining in sales, it can also help find customers that are less likely to be diverted to online retailers.

It also lists the top 5 RPGs (the magazine goes to 10 or 20, IIRC)

1. Dungeons & Dragons
2. Mutants & Masterminds
3. World of Darkness
4. Exalted
5. Scion

I'm shocked they have Scion number 5. What else is in the top ten?

Maybe one of the game retailers will chime in. I don't get the magazine, but at least one of the stores I frequent does. Maybe I can snarf his issue when he's done with it.

Just wondering...why are you shocked. Scion is pretty popular on rpg.net and as someone who owns the game, it's pretty cool.

I also think the 3 book model appealed to alot of people( gamers like to collect, and there's something pleasing about knowing you can collect a complete game line without breaking the bank.).

I also own and run the game. It is still relatively new only been out two months or so. That is a very small window to call something best top 5 RPG. And it's a fine game but I wouldn't place it on any top 5 list.

I'm sure it's based on sales, and sales from game stores. It's new. It's hot. So, it will get the initial bump in sales.

The real test is how far up it appears in the list this time next year.
