Idea: D&D TV Show

D&D tv show

So what title would you like a new d&d tv series to be?

More importantly what story would you want told, supposing we're talking 4e will it start off with a massive war that ends as a result of a cataclysmic disaster forcing the surviving nations to sign a peace agreement if only to allow themselves time to recover and figure out what actually happened?

Will the series start off in say Sharn for example and work initially around a group of characters before they set off say having a few episodes dealing with a pair who head off to Karrnath to find out what happened to a missing parent or perhaps a wild trip through the Talenta Plains perhaps even thwarting a raid on an lightning rail (train whatever).

What would YOU like to see?

I say call it Pathfinders and have it either tell the story of a down on their luck group of farmers kids who hire themselves out as guards to traveling merchants, they see the world beyond their small town and learn what a limited view they had of it; The ruined old empire would make a good narrative issue.

Or just follow the early years of Drizzt. (Not my first choice but viable to be greenlighted)

well, if not Drizzt, maybe at least set in FR. There are enough people that are familiar with FR from the books that are not gamers that it might have wider appeal. I think that was why they pitched the last series for FR as well.
'Course, the only way I see this happening is if the Song of Fire and Ice finally airs on HBO and gets great numbers. Then there will be the inevatable attempt of the big 4 to put on similar shows to ride the coattails...

*Shudder*
A good thing that the time of cheaply made fantasy beat em up movies are over (by the way you forgot Sindbad).

Such films worked in the 70s with Bud Spencer and Terence Hill, but the Hercules etc. things were just awful.

And yet, both Hercules and Xena lasted six seasons. Not many shows now-a-days get that kind of run. Beastmaster lasted three.

I think a D&D TV show could be done and done well. You're seldom going to see the level of magic you see in a D&D game both because it's expensive and in terms of a narrative story it's ridiculous. Look for something about the level of what Willow could do in the last couple seasons of Buffy, or that that big boom-boom stuff only shows up every four or five episodes or so. That said, look for lots of little magical effects.

I think you'd start off with your main spellcaster being young and untried and as the show progresses (and goes into the next couple of seasons with a budget increase), the magical effects get better and more showy.

Most monsters would be the humanoid ones; probably orcs or goblins. Human opponents would be the rule of the day.

Having said that, I'm looking forward to the HBO version of a Game of Thrones.
This!
Speaking of Dragonlance, you might have missed the animated version that came out on DVD last year. If you did see it, you are probably longing for a way to get back those two hours of your life.
And this..

Yeah, they should definitely chose a name and give free advertisement to one of their competitors. That would make total sense.
