Idea for ammo depletion

It seems to me that marking arrows fired on your sheet or scrap paper is a lot less trouble than this system.

But heck, I am a simulationist, and prefer accurate book-keeping. :)

If you are going to go this route, then Hong's suggestion about simply rolling at the end of an encounter seems the most convenient.
Know whatcha mean.
Really our low arrow/bolt supply was solved by a Portable Hole. Bought 20 Quivers of each and both the Crossbow wielder and the Bowman are happy as clams. We we goto towns, I always shell out some gold to refill the 20 each. It allows for happy low semi-accurate book-keeping. We really only keep track of the specilaty arrows we snag up from time to time.

um...magic? special materials? cost? accounting?

while this idea works fine with a closed system with a fixed price (IE a wand; ages ago I saw the d20 -> d12 -> d10 -> etc system for wands to avoid needing to track charges and add a sense of wonder to the idea (no one really knows how much oomp a wand has left), it does not work when renewable, variable priced resources are involved.

unless we operate on a "quiver of adamantine arrows" = x cost and then drawing from that quiver requires a role. if we go with the "per combat" idea, this means that you roll against any quiver you own and have used during a combat.

seems overly complex.

Seriously... Who uses magic arrows any more?

+1 bane arrows, and arrows with special materials (cold iron / silver / adamantine) both make regular appearances in my game. Also, arrows of slaying make an occasional appearance.

Mostly people do focus on the bow, but there are special exceptions. :)
