Ideas for events at a coronation?

I wanted the players to feel like they were beginning in a podunk, and the campaign began on festival, so I introduced them to a little something called "Pushcow." It is a competition to see how many feat you can bull rush a cow over three attempts. The first roll you can charge and get a bonus, the next two rolls are normal. A roll of 1 on any check means the cow turns and attacks.

It has never failed to amuse.

DUDE! That's so cool, I'm forking it to another thread.

Let's see:

At the festival
(1) Gambling
(2) Group combat
(3) Dueling
(4) Archery contest
(5) Jousting
(6) Wizards duel

Events and encounters
(1) The court jester pickpockets a PC
(2) The new king's slutty daughter hits on a PC
(3) The PC's are invited to a royal feast
(4) The PCs are arrested for a crime they did not commit (mistaken identity)
(5) An assassin attempts to kill the new king
(6) During the coronation, the peasants revolt
(7) During the coronation, the nobles stage a coup
(8) During the coronation, the high priest presenting the crown flamestrikes the king
(9) The PCs are introduced to ambassadors from other nations ... espionage and international incidents follow
(10) The PCs are hired to kill the king
(11) The PCs are hired to steal the crown jewels
(12) The crown jewels are discovered stolen
(13) The Pcs discover the king is actually a doppleganger/demon/lycanthrope/vampire

How about a coronation ball with a mysteriously beautiful lady who enchants every man who dances with her, and who vanishes exactly at midnight?

The King invited twelve fairy queens to attend his wedding, but the forgotten one shows up and berates him for so insulting her, and leaves muttering dire warnings of doom for his reign and all his descendants' reigns for 500 years.

As the coronation begins, a mass of archers hidden in the balconies above the ceremonial hall stand up and fire down upon all of the new King's worst rivals and enemies, all drawn to the one place where they must appear and cannot defend themselves.

Halfway through the feast after the coronation, the king's taster turns blue in the face and collapses in front of everyone. Heart attack, or poison?

In the real world, coronations are typically accompanied by major religious ritual as well.
Hey, hey.

We try to avoid talking about religion here.

Some thoughts...
  • Cleaning - people will be white-washing and cleaning up the buildings, city and themselves.
  • Selection of entertainment - contest will be held to find the best for show.
  • Selection of guest housing - people will have to stay somewhere.
  • Food selection - somethings will have to be hunted.
  • Games (this also brings out and IDs people)
    [*]Horse Races
    [*]Archery
    [*]Swords
    [*]Magic
  • Gifts - people will be looking for or making items to sell

There is a PDF for Fairs and such...

The Hangover Part III: The Coronation

A Coronation has visiting dignataries and copious amounts of drink.

Sure, you can do the burglary bit or the medieval festival of archery, melee and jousting + harpers and so forth.

But something that would be REALLY cool? The Hangover: Pt III - The Coronation.

Have the PCs get rip-roaring drunk and forget what happened (spell/poison effct). Include a visiting royal dignatary as part of the group that got hammered with the PCs and who also has a memory loss. Maybe the PCs are made responsible for him and he's missing. They have to get the missing prince to the Church in time for the Coronation or much embarassment and loss of face will result. Beause of the role-playing aspect and embarassment element of things, think of the FUN you could have by revealing during the investigation what stupid FRAT BOY events the Paladin did while under the influence, say.

The adventure becomes a reconstruction of the prior evening's drunken events. You can go literally anywhere with that hook.

By throwing in the ideas of a visiting royal dignatary who the PCs befriend and are responsible for, plus the resulting low-key and discrete (but very urgent) investigations over what happened during the evening and making this the PC's "fault", much hilarity could ensue.

And you can build hooks into anything you want into the "black-out" irresponsible party theme. Wide open man.
