If you want to do it yourself, put skills points in Lore. [Or buy potions of Lore.] It can take a significant # of them, so it doesn't make sense for most chars. Ditto the Identify spell.
Otherwise, talk to a merchant in town. The identify and sell options come up after you speak to one. Click the item you want to sell in your own inventory and you'll see.

Explorer
Right-click on the item in your inventory and select the Eye symbol (Examine). If your Lore is high enough, it will describe the object fully. Otherwise, get a Lore potion or take it to the merchant as described previously.
