Identify... this!

we use Monte's Object Loresight. Much better, cheap, and roleplaytastic!!!

Out of curiousity, where can that be found?
--------
In our campaign, we usually let Identify do most of the work of figuring out an item... if we have magic armor or weapons, it usually doesn't take long before the DM will just tell us what the bonus is, otherwise we're saying things like: "I hit an AC 24 plus or minus and magic bonuses from the sword I got from the ogre."
-or-
"My AC is 18 plus or minus and bonus from the magical buckler I picked up from the lizard men..."

Invariably, to ease book-keeping we end up eventually being told what the item adds to the character...

Detect Magic gives the level of the item (e.g. +2 weapon).

Actually, it doesn't.

DETECT MAGIC:
The character detect magical auras. The amount of information revealed depends on how long the character studies a particular area or subject:

1st Round: Presence or absence of magical auras.

2nd Round: Number of different magical auras and the strength of the strongest aura.

3rd Round: The strength and location of each aura. If the items or creatures bearing the auras are in line of sight, the character can make Spellcraft skill checks to determine the school of magic involved in each. (Make one check per aura; DC 15 + spell level, or 15 + half caster level for a nonspell effect.)

The "aura strength" != the enhancement bonus ("+2", etc.). It reads "faint", "moderate", or "strong."

"Identify" will tell you it's a +2 Dagger (or whatever) if the +2 is the most basic part of the weapon's enchantment.

Heh... seems it greatly depends on DM's inclinations and campaign tone/style. }:) I feared it wasn't an easy answer...

In the campaign for which I'm asking we haven't had a chance to give the items a good look-over, though we shall do that at our next opportunity. Maybe the DM will be generous... :P

Thanks for all the replies!

Sorry, I disagree with your thoughts on wands. It almost seems as though you think that magic items are turned out by a factory somewhere . ;)
In the Forgotten Realms, that particular factory is called "Thay".

The only thing I change is that identify will tell you if it has additional powers.

Oh, and I changed the 100gp pearl to 100gp worth of gemdust. Otherwise the pearl divers would be very, very busy indeed. ;)
