D&D 4E If 4e fails you, what then?

I really cannot see 4e failing, but if it does I'll homebrew using the core 4e quick starts without whatever caused the trouble.

I really doubt it though, the 4e ruleset seems very simple and you could hang a lot from it, you could even import a lot of 3e stuff without too much trouble.

I've looked at the pathfinder, and it seems to me, they are just stacking band-aids onto 3e, way too much fiddly stuff. The art is nice though.

I miss the old Cthulhu - not the d20 crap.
I know, it was not very playable, characters did not last long, some parties mostly composed of former university professors too soon adopted the "fire in the hole" policy...
Still, most times, a five star ambiance all the way!

Well to be fair a lot of those professors might have been in WW1. Really they're just rediscovering old instincts.

Are you destined to be forgoten? Will your life fade in the shadow of greater beings?

Fails ME!? Silence, dog. Your only purpose is to die by my hand. ;)

Do you realize the power you might hold? When the world of flesh is beneath you, even creatures mysterious and magical will fall! Follow, and receive the gift you are owed by the blood in your veins.

In other news, if 4e fails me I'll be playing BGII and might venture "outside".

If 4e turns out to be disappointing?

1. More time for Spirit of the Century, Buffy, and Trail of Cthulhu.

2. I'll get more done at work since I won't be trolling these boards all day.

3. As for D&D, I'll never play any iteration of 3e again.

If I don't enjoy Fourth Edition - a slim possibility, from what I can tell - then I'll probably take my time deciding what game to use for heroic, swords-and-sorcery fantasy.

I'd be prepared to continue running my Rise of the Runelords game using the revised Third Edition rules, at least until they crumple under their own weight. This, mind you, only because we already started it - I can see the inevitability of the ruleset's problems' kicking in, and we're only at 3rd level!

New fantasy games, though? I might look at something like True 20, which is a fine game. I'd be prepared to try Iron Heroes or even something more radical like E6. Anything with a fairly modern or Weird Tales attitude to fantasy - I could never play a game, like Castles & Crusades, which was designed by "traditionalists" when it comes to either gaming or the fantasy genre.

Realistically, though, I don't have such an attachment to fantasy gaming that I would have to find a replacement for D&D in the immediate aftermath of giving up on Fourth Edition. I would probably spend more time and energy on games like World of Darkness, Unknown Armies, using GURPS to do an Atomic Horror or Infinite Worlds game, something like that.
