Well, I have read all of the A Game of Thrones series. I'm not sure GRR can be compared to JRR. GRR is nowhere as influential as JRR was

I think he is MORE influential than JRR was at this point in Tolkien's career. Now, I doubt GRR will be able to keep up and become the level of Tolkein 50 years later...

and his stories are nothing like JRR's.

I think there are similarities.

Only that they are both based on the middle ages. A Game of Thrones has a stronger middle ages feel. The both have magic in them, but AGOT is less "magical". Races beyond humans? AGOT, not really.

I think you'd have to stretch some real big generalities find much in common.

If nothing else, GRRM's elves* are much more unpleasant than Tolkien's elves.

And as for D&Dish books...

Mike Stackpole's Dragoncrown books are *very* D&Dish, with the small party, divvying up of magic items, etc. Heck, there's one fight where I can just *see* the rounds. However, that might be just my interpretation...they're very good. I can't say I'm fond of his current series, though.

Also, I'll take this opportunity to push anything by David Gemmell, particularly the Drenai books (start with Legend).
