If it aint broke, don't fix it......

Darmanicus

I'm Ray...of Enfeeblement
I'm talking about the Retributive Amulet from BoED.

+2 Sacred bonus to AC.
Returns 50% of all melee HP damage to offender, (not special like poison).

Cost: 56k

I, obviously, like the sound of this little trinket and intend to buy it at the 1st opportunity since I'm the front line tank and tend to take a fair ol' beatin' virtually every week.

I also want to use it as the base item to upgrade with further magic abilities, (such as con boost + X, natural armour + X and the periapt of health ability), so as to create a unique item that people will associate with my character alone, ('The Scarab of al Sulak', or some such thing).

I had a chat with Inconsequenti_Al who reckons this is a way overpowered item and was wondering what the rest of you thought?

P.S. If I don't reply to any of your thoughts very quickly it's because I only have access to me works P.C. and can only use it in my own time. So please don't be offended if I can't reply until tomorrow.

At that price, yes it is overpowered. I do not think the item is so broken as to remove it from the game though. You could up the cost and lower the results to good effect, I think. But honestly, a DR 10/- item would probably be better. This item scales with the character's enemies, which is the problem with it. Maybe even adding a 20 hp cap per attack could balance it somewhat.

What does "return" mean in this context? Does it mean you only take 1/2 damage and the enemy takes 1/2, or does it mean you still take full damage, and the enemy takes 1/2?

If it's the latter, then I think it's massively underpriced. If the former, than I'd not allow it in-game as anything less than an artifact.

You take full damage, your enemy takes half.

I think its busted as written,,,
However in my own game I had a player come up with something along the same lines about 6 years ago that I still use.....an amulet that unleashes a magicmissle spell at the person that just hit you....I think we priced it about 90k
