If the 2011 Setting was brand new...

So thus far in 4e we've had nothing but retreads. I'm going to break down the worlds and what I believe is the defining "elevator pitch"

FR: High Fantasy with enough room for everyone and everything

Eberron: Fantasy meets technology and politics during the fallout of a recent war

Dark Sun: Taking what you know about DnD and making it savage, dangerous, and turned on its head.

So what's left? We know Spelljammer, Planescape, and Ravenloft are out, despite being popular in the minds of gamers. (Though the debate on Spelljammer is wide open) Other options exist, but my hope is that we get something fresh and brand new.

If WoTC was going to create something new for 4e, what would be it's "elevator pitch?"

I offer nothing that isn't already handled in core stuff or one of the above mentioned worlds.

That being said there's still the other 3 finalists from the Eberron-selected campaign competition back in 2002 (incl one by the Order of the Stick's Rich Burlew) which IIRC they purchased so they have the rights to them right?

1. The dawn of time, when civilization is in its infancy and all the ancient magic and ancient evils locked away in other settings are freely roaming around. A world where the PCs get to be the primordial mythic heroes they normally only get to hear about.

2. A massive archipelago in the Astral Sea, a sort of playground of the gods where every island is its own experiment in physics, culture, or the meaning of life. But no man is an island, and as the protection of the gods is repealed, heroes from these wildly different isles must unite to save themselves.

Midnight by Fantasy Flight Games is an interesting setting. Interestingly enough FFG stopped support and sales of Midnight in 2009 and has removed any mention of it from their website.

I think they should practice what they preach and flesh out the world they started in the DMGs. That way they can stop thrusting points of light and dragonborn on other established campaign worlds.

Or there in, the core at least. Though I don't think Shadowloft has gotten the love Planejammer has.

Could have a new contest.

Could use some of the runner ups in the previous contest.

Could do a 'modern' setting.

I'd love an emphasis of the built in setting with a foci at higher levels on the planes.
