If they "silo" spells, why not skills?

Primary and secondary skills???
WoW ALERT!!! WoW ALERT!!!

I like it. I hope they do something like that, some skills are important for a RPG to flesh out the character, but not so imporant in the overall game balance.

But will they keep skill ranks? It's quite possible that they'll go the SAGA route and get rid of them.
This was my thought as well. Saga does a good job of ensuring your PC's overall competence increases with your level. It could be thought of as "siloing", but is more general.

PS: IMC, I already give two "silo'd" skills called Education Skills, which must be chosen from Knowledge, Craft, Profession or Perform.

Am I the only person who's picturing all your class abilities being readied in their underground concrete silos to be launched at the Soviets the attacking orc mobs?

I can just see it now: klaxons blare, the ground parts, fireballs shoot out engulfing the orcs in flame! :D

OK, maybe I'm just weird... :o

I have found that many out of combat / out of dungeon skills, such as Forgery, Disguise, Diplomacy, Gather Information, Craft, Profession, Perform, Knowledge (Misc), (and whatever else you would like to add to that list) get about as much use as the player wants them to.

When I had a chance to run a Rogue in an Eberron game, I got huge amounts of use out of Disguise and Forgery. Basically, it re-enforced or replaced bluff checks. It is one thing to claim you are a messenger for the local authorities. It is another if you have an official looking message and a convincing disguise. I was able to commit all sorts of mischief.

The half of the trick getting the most use out of your skills is in being able to think of viable options to a solution beyond those simply presented to you. The other half is in having a DM who is willing to look beyond what is written down for the encounter and willing to generate reasonable check DC's on the fly.

END COMMUNICATION

Your post definitely states half of the issue. The other half of the issue is the DM. I play with a DM that says no to many things like knowledge checks and the use of social skills. :(

So, yes, the player can get as much mileage out of it.... as the DM allows. Find a flexible DM with a creative player and 'Wow, I never knew I could use that skill that way!'. :)

Now back to your regularly scheduled thread...
