And finally, C&C seems to me to be a way of reintroducing all those old flaws back into 3.x -- no thank you!

I'm curious to hear what makes you say that. I've always considered C&C as old fashioned AD&D with many of the worst flaws edited out.

Anyway I chose C&C. For ease of DMing, ease of learning, and ease of houseruling.

OK, I feel dumb, and I am an Old Head....What is BRP? I have never heard of it, and if it is cool, I would at least like to check it out...I have a favorite, but since it is not listed, I will have to pick Ars Magica

Basic Roleplaying - the engine that powers Stormbringer, RuneQuest, Call of Cthulhu (the original Call of Cthulhu, anyhow), Hawkmoon, and several other games.

It was close between B/X and C&C but I went for the latter for greater flexibility. Also, it is easy to house rule without worries about "Breaking" anything.

Of course, a lot of this depends on the players. Would *they* be happier with the "troupe" play of Ars Magica? Or do they want the "quick-start and GO!" ability of C&C?

OK.JD...my all-time favorite is still RQII, by Chaosium, and I really like Stormbringer, and Elric...Like I said, I am an old man...

I'm pushing 30 myself, but only started gaming in earnest at 19 and was introduced to the hobby via AD&D 1e, Tunnels & Trolls, and the first printing of the Palladium RPG. As a result, I always gravitate towards older games - the only four [somewhat] recent releases that have really won me over are:

  • Age of Empire

  • Ars Magic (1st, 4th, 5th Editions)

  • Over the Edge

  • The Window (2nd Edition)

For me, "old-fashioned AD&D with the worst flaws edited out" is D&D 3.5. ;) I have absolutely no interest in any system that begins with the assumption that a game more like AD&D used to be is a good idea.

If it works for you, terrific. The point of gaming is to have fun. I could not have fun with such a game is all I'm saying.
