Holmes

I started with the Holmes Edition. That old picture with the dragon on the cover just sucked my friends and I into the world of gaming. We were all around 10-11 years old back then.

Likewise, and likewise, though I think the first version that I actually owned was Moldvay.

Holmes, apparently (never called it that myself!).

Holmes here as well.

I also never called it that. I've always refered to it (and heard it refered to) as the 'blue-box' set.

edit:

As a side note, I think we played basic for about 3 months then switched to AD&D and never played 'D&D' again until 3rd came out.

I started playing with the Moldvay edition, but the first set I personally owned was the Mentzer edition. I think I still have the books around here somewhere...ahh...happy times.

I started with the red box Mentzer edition. Got all of them up to and including the Immortals gold box, and then moved onto 1st ed AD&D for a couple years till 2nd ed came out.

Are you sure about the date for the Moldvay set? I thought I started playing in 1979 (maybe it was 1980, but no later for sure) and I started with the Moldvay set.

Thornir, you may have the same "misremembering bug" that I do - I was 10 years old when I started with Moldvay in 1981, but swore for years it was released in 1980, until someone did the digging.

Mentzer

The Mentzer box was my start, I saw it in a magazine and asked for it for my birthday. And then, more than twenty years later, I had the opportunity to visit Larry Elmore in his studio, and the original painting for that box cover was the first thing I saw. That was a unique experience.
