If you wish to send regards to the Gygax Family, Please Read

I know a lot of people want to contact the Gygax family and send their regards and well wishes. I am afraid that his regular email account, which he used for business (I know this from working with him over many years) might become too overwhelmed with letters of condolences that the family will have a hard time sorting out all his business affairs at a later time.

With that in mind I have created a separate email account that I will hand over to Gail, Gary's wife, when I talk again with her tomorrow.

The email address to send any personal messages to the family is: InMemoryOfGaryGygax@gmail.com

Pass around the word.

Just a note that this is legitimate, and that Kerry was a friend of Gary's. Thanks for doing this, Kerry. I know you guys were close.

I'm trying to drum up support for something like this over on RPG.net. So, there is a non-trivial amount of interest. I was thinking maybe something like a memorial fund?

Maybe a donation (or scholarship if we raise enough) in his name to his alma mater (U. of Chicago) would be appreciated, since he was a teacher of sorts? Or the Lake Geneva school district?

I think Gary's most enduring legacy is the inspiration he provided to millions around the world. For me he lives on in the hearts and minds of gamers everywhere.

That said, you can’t underestimate the power of money for a worthy cause. If he had a charity that he was fond of, let me know and I will make a donation. I will also dedicate a full page to it in the next Dragon Roots Magazine for try and drum up more interest and donations. Although, I’m sure the internet will be me to that margin.

Im not sure about a charity. I will ask the family tomorrow and post what they would like to respond with.

I was thinking about this, too. If I still had the money, I'd start another charity and gear it towards something amazing for Mr. Gygax. Here's the crazy idea that ran through my head:

Someone should build a real dungeon in his honor.

I'm completely serious.

Imagine a plot of overgrown wooded land with a big foreboding stone entryway leading underground. The underground structure can be all labyrinthine with clues to its maze etched into the walls left by old "adventurers". Hidden doors, secret passageways, D&D trope cameos (certain statues spring to mind!), the works. No lights, except maybe ensconced lanterns that one could bring lamp oil to fill. Plenty of securely mounted candle-holders. And, of course, every large room opens up into an antechamber with a big stone table surrounded by stone benches -- with scoops cut out of the tabletop at every seating place for holding piles of dice...

Nothing artificial, nothing "comfortable", just pure ancient earthy mystique for zany gamers. Something as permanently adventurous as Gary's effects on all of us.
