Someone should build a real dungeon in his honor.

I'm completely serious.

Imagine a plot of overgrown wooded land with a big foreboding stone entryway leading underground. The underground structure can be all labyrinthine with clues to its maze etched into the walls left by old "adventurers". Hidden doors, secret passageways, D&D trope cameos (certain statues spring to mind!), the works. No lights, except maybe ensconced lanterns that one could bring lamp oil to fill. Plenty of securely mounted candle-holders. And, of course, every large room opens up into an antechamber with a big stone table surrounded by stone benches -- with scoops cut out of the tabletop at every seating place for holding piles of dice...

Nothing artificial, nothing "comfortable", just pure ancient earthy mystique for zany gamers. Something as permanently adventurous as Gary's effects on all of us.

Surely all the save-or-die traps would be a liability problem...

I was thinking about this, too. If I still had the money, I'd start another charity and gear it towards something amazing for Mr. Gygax. Here's the crazy idea that ran through my head:

You mean like a permanent True Dungeon? The first seed in a Gygaxland?

While perhaps fun, I think in term of charity, something like a fund for donations to local libraries might be a bit more.. charitable.

This is what I was thinking. Maybe a gigantic, concerted donation to Child's Play (Penny Arcade's big charitable thing - they donate video games and stuff to children's hospitals, or children in hospital. Something like that.)

I think the PA guys would be behind this, too, come to think of it. Maybe we can have them donate D&D books when 4e is released this summer. :)

I handed over the email account to the Gygax’ earlier today. When they have time, I think they will be very touched by the outpouring of support from friends, family and fans alike.

Do you know if the family has a particular charity they would like donations to be made to in his name?

Personally, I think there should be established The Gary Gygax Foundation; a non-profit organziation that could support causes Gary would want to contribute to. If his family or close friends were willing to be involved in such an effort to ensure funds went to the right cause, all the support fans and friends wanted to donate would clearly and unquestionably be contributed in his name. I believe that would be a fitting testament to his legacy.

Well, it's an idea anyways.

I did ask about a charity to donate to on Gary's behalf and they wanted a little time to think about it.
If they come to a decision I will post it.

Thanks
