I'll admit it: I'm playing an Illithid.

I'm taking a break from DMing, which means I finally get to test someone else's good judgment. And I've been allowed to play a Mind Flayer. ECL +14. Astonishing.

Any other thoughts on what could be done with this character who really should never have been allowed to exist? I'm not interested in making my DM's life a pain or undermining all his plans (at least, not the long-term ones -- thwarting the difficult encounters is IMO a player's first duty!), just in having fun with this freakish creature. Any and all advice, ideas, and musings are appreciated.

HMM I was going to suggest Barbarian but as you are Lawful I would go with Monk or Psion. Heck maybe the DM will let you use your Tentacles and get the Mink HTH damage as a bonus, for Tentacle Fu and Hentai action
Or maybe not..

Compared to some of our local players a mind flayer is pretty normal, one group I played with had the following

1 cat man (played by me)
1 flind
1 centaur
1 sylph
1 oni
bucket of gnolls
and a human paladin all memebers of the same party

Half Dragons, Weres, Leprecauns, Vampires, demons and all sorts of stuff are are standard player races

A mind flayers, especially a good one (The DM would require it) would for in just fine

So all the monsters can fit in they use a Ring Of Human
" like an alter self at will item, its expensive but worth it.

Me I don't play with these guys, once was enough.

I don't have SAN to spare

I would second going with rogue. Go strong in hide, move silently and disguise. Could help you not get noticed in town, as well as help get you in better position to use your powers. And as someone else mentioned, sneak attack. :)

While I have neever had an illithid as a PC, I can still remember my joy when I first discovered what wonderful foes they made way back in 1E days.

Through 2E and now 3E, I find that there are few creatures as flexible and powerful as an illithid played well. ECL 14 sounds like a good deal to me.

Cheers

PS: Have you checked out the Life Eater of Baphomet prestige class on the WotC website? http://wizards.com/dnd/article.asp?x=fr/pg20020911b The sample NPC they use is an illithid.

Oh, and I gave them a pretty lethal piece of equipment called a cinema, but what that is will have to wait for another day.

"Dude, the mindflayer just did 119 points of damage to you."

"What? How?"

"Ummm... he hit you with a movie theater."

Whee, lots of stuff I wish I had time to reply to (unfortunately I couldn't get to the boards for a couple of days, mysteriously), but I appreciate the comments... Re: Psion or Psychic Warrior, if we had the PsiHB, I probably would have gone for that, but sadly we don't. Monk works for the character theme (since someone asked, his reason for venturing aboveground was traditional wanderlust -- the other mind flayers were all too bookish and obsessed with theory rather than action, and he was just too impatiently ambitious for that.)

Anyway, did end up taking monk, and got an OK on considering my tentacles an unarmed strike (for damage, flurry of blows, et cetera purposes)... At 14th level, it's not a huge difference (the others are still dealing out way more damage than these... mainly taking Monk for its utility)

Some more fun game moments:

- We find a genie in a bottle. Cash in on some non-risky stuff, then we have one wish left... We've been warned that genies are tricky, and will try to pervert your intentions, so I suggest to him that it might be fun to give a person what they really want for once. So we get a Ring of Three Wishes.

- Later, we get hired by Orcus (apparently this is the plot of the campaign) to go and destroy the cults of the other Demon Princes... We gather some information on Demogorgon's cult, and find out (among other things) that the guy who's running it is assembling a library of vile things, as an emblem of his evil or something. So I go out and buy a blank book, and begin writing The Sexual Confessions of a Mind Flayer, as a starting point to infiltrating his compound.
