Illumians

Frankly, these guys look overpowered... but boring.

I mean, a 20th level pc (19th level + 1 LA) rogue is going to pop an extra 3d6 sneak attack? If he's like lots of rogues, that's with two-weapon fighting madness; so when flanking, he's prolly getting 5-6 attacks, and assuming a good round where everything hits dealing an extra 15-18d6... for a one level offset? That wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't potentially every round.

They don't seem so bad...but I don't like the runes much. I'd choose more unique effects or something. Give 'em some pizzazz instead of just runes that help each class' special thing.

Gee, a paladin with the saving throw rune...whooo! Uber-saves!

They seem kinda interesting, and I could possibly fit them IMC, but I doubt that they would ever see play (except as NPCs).

OTOH, to have that effect, he has to have a glowing circle of runes around his head, which make it just a little bit difficult to hide, or even keep your location secret when invisible...

And sure he can stifle them, but then they stop working, and it takes a standard action to reactivate them again...

Sounds like these would fit in great with AU and its focus on runes.
Actually when I read it I thought "Man, WotC's trying to get Runechildren now!"

At least that's my initial reaction.

The concept is interesting but:

1. Surely some time and effort could have been spent on inventing a more appropriate name? Then again, "goliath" wasn't exactly inspired....
2. Where on Oerth/Toril/Eberron will these fit?

Anywhere you could fit a bunch of human recluses.

Except they're not human anymore.

In monasteries, for the most part. Out of the way centers of learning, and occasionally maintaining a small, insular community in major population centers. You could insert them into an established setting pretty easily, because if they go to the trouble to put out their letters when they go out, they look quite human. Just have 'em keep to themselves and it wouldn't be too large a stretch to have the more social amongst them be nigh invisible as a social group.
