I'm looking for books that "Level" magic items as you level.

I thought I'd draw upon your collective wisdoms and ask if you know of books where items improve as the player's character levels.

The only book I'm aware of for this is Weapons of Legacy, by WotC.

(We are using pathfinder, but any d20/ogl book would be fine).

Thanks!

I think that is the only "source" that gives a detailed system, the only other places I remember seeing such things done were adventure modules, like one or two done by Fiery Dragon. But there were many third party publishers for 3E, so I am sure I missed at least one other possible source.

I think there is a game company called the Game Mechanics and they had these magic item supplement books. I think they had rules on leveling up magic items, but you had to take a prestige class too to go with it. Not sure.

Well, there's always the option of a character taking the appropriate item crafting feat, and upgrading the weapons at a discount.

The Magus from Pathfinder's upcoming Ultimate Magic book gets an ability to make any weapon he's wielding magical (1 minute at a time), and, starting at 5th-level, start adding special abilities like flaming or shock in place of basic +s.

I think the PF Paladin gets something similar with his Divine Bond ability.

Otherwise, like Treebore said, I can't think of anything specific.

Thanks for the responses so far. A little more info. I'm the DM for "The Drow Wars Trilogy".

My players are each reincarnated heroes who have items that are connected to their souls. These are the items I'm working on.

Since I'm DM, I have the luxury to "break the rules" for their benefit, the goal being to keep the game fun and balanced between all the players, and to provide fun stuff for them to do.

So really, any ideas in this department can be very helpful.

Mainly I'm looking for inspiration, especially thematic inspiration. Thanks again!

I'm doing this in a pathfinder game I'm currently running. One of the players IMC has a half-orc barbarian who is somewhat superstitious towards magic. Her axe is imbued with a friendly, guardian ancestor spirit that grows in power as she gains levels (ie, gets further enchantments). I'm not using any special rules for this- merely just using the general magical item pricing rules and pc wealth by level (allocating the special gear as part of the general treasure value i hand out to them). Seems to be working fine so far (we're at 8th level now).

As for published resources, you might look to the soulknife (it got an updated version in the third party pathfinder book Psionics Unleashed), which levels up its soul blade with various special abilities. Another would be the 3.0 Oriental Adventures samurai (who can upgrade there own family swords with special tea ceremonies.).

Unearthed Arcana introduced a couple of items for items that level. If you want to be really simple about it, just hand out a portion of "treasure" as periodic upgrades.
