Lots of people like them now, which is a significant shift in audience attitude from a few years ago.

When 3.0 was out, people complained about 5 level PrCs, mostly because they felt they didn't feel "complete enough".

I think at this point, people have come around to the idea that a PrC doesn't necessarily equate to a shift in career. Rather, they see PrCs as something which can serve many functions, among them the honing of a specific ability or theme. That's what 5 level PrCs do best - they give a player or DM the ability to fine tune a character along a specific path, without forcing them into the long term commitment of a 10 level PrC.

For what it's worth, I love 5 level PrCs when they are written to serve the above purpose.

I've been sitting here today working on some paladin-specific prestige classes, advancement strategies, and feat chains. In my opinion, the 3-level and 5-level prestige classes allow a player to enjoy the "newness" of a PrC multiple times with the same character -- these shorter prestige classes are the "new car smell" of a character.

After all, it's a hell of a lot more fun to get an entirely new class -- especially one with a concept that slots into some previous career choices -- than it is to keep plugging away at one class. And, in my opinion, most of the 10-level prestige classes feel padded. The 3- and 5-level PrCs are wham, bam, thank you ma'am classes that get you in and out quickly.

What is it with 5-level PrCs? For every PC ability except iterative attacks, 4 levels is a "rounder" number. (Saves, BAB, spell progression, bonus Feats, Sneak Attack, etc... these things seem to happen every 2 or 4 levels.)

I like 5 level PrCs. Heck, I like the 3 level PrCs in book of the planes.

Ya, those were really well done. THey gave just enough to get the feeling of the organization with out the need for a huge level comitment.
