I'm not that charming...

I have a rogue3/sorc4 in a homebrew swashbuckling campaign. he has an 18 charisma. He sort of has a style like "the man in black" from the princess bride. ok, that's the easy part. the hard part is roleplaying him. I personally have maybe a 13 cha. maybe 14 if I got a good sleep. But i can't be as cool as him. I'm looking for some cool/fancy/totally sweet lines/moves/whatever. I mean i'm not failing at it entirely, but I really want to have that panache that he has. Any suggestions? (other than watching the movies a few times...already done) I don't want to rip off a bunch movies either...

Watch the Princess Bride a few times. :) I wonder if there exists a book of quotations from Swashbuckling movies? That would be neat, eh?

If all else fails, sometimes one has to revert to 3rd person role-playing and say, "well, I try to charm the hell out of her...please let me roll because I haven't a clue what to say..."

The GM should smile and allow that role, because you are not afterall your character. If the GM says no then ask him, "then why roll stats like charisma? Must I BE my stats, or is this a character?"

Valid points, but i use the roll-then-act-it-out-method. I would like a book of quotes, but that would just be ripping them off and I'd hate to have to mem them. DM: Ok, he jumps on the table, grabs a drink and acts like your no threat. ME: hold on, I know i have a witty comment for this somwhere (rifles through book of quotes). does anyone have a broad, conceptual thoughts/idea/suggestions?

I would say swiftly delivered pithy remarks are intelligence. Charisma more the force of personality. There are plenty of times you'll see comedians make jokes you damn well know the vast majority of the audiance didn't get, but audiance responds to the delivery more than the substance of the joke.

Dennis Miller did had a classic one about George Stephenapolous doing more for "spin" than anyone since Enrico Fermi. Now that is an obscure pun. I'm sure most people can tell that it is supposed to be funny, but I would say very few know why. Hyperbole detected. Origin unknown.

Why must you pick on charisma so? But seriosuly social grace, elegance and being an overall smooth operator is a charisma thing.

1. Ask your DM to roll, just as you do when lifting a gate with a Str 18 fighter.

2. (better) Write down 1-3 situations where you get to be cool, and ask the DM to include it.
Example: You write a card saying, "A crony woman yells at me "Your a drunken fool!"" and give the card to your DM before play, better some time before so he can think of a suitable situation.
When you all celebrate your success slaying a dragon, the crony appears and shouts at you.
You lean back and answer, "Oh yeah? Well, you're ugly, but at least I get sober..."
That way, you can have cool remarks, don't have to look up something at short notice, anbd if you use one per session, don't overshadow your fellow players.

3. Use both.

Retorts for any occasion...

Here a few one-liners for you...

"Have you always been [Insert insulting trait here], or did you have to serve an apprenticeship for that?"

"I want to be just like you when I grow up... Except [Insert admirable trait here], and not quite so [Insert insulting trait here]."

"Did you know that you have an extraordinary head-like growth on your neck? I know an excellent leech who could have that lanced for you."

Don't forget, actions can speak louder than words... Using your own example, try something like this:

DM: Ok, he jumps on the table, grabs a drink and acts like your no threat.

YOU: Alright, to prove that I am indeed a threat, I Quickdraw my rapier and attack his belt, in an attempt to drop his drawers around his ankles.

Or...

DM: Ok, he jumps on the table, grabs a drink and acts like your no threat.

YOU: Alright, to prove that I am indeed a threat, I Quickdraw my rapier and Improved Disarm him of his drink. If possible, I'll catch the mug and down the ale myself.

Or...

DM: Ok, he jumps on the table, grabs a drink and acts like your no threat.

YOU: Alright, to prove that I am indeed a threat, I kick the table out from beneath him.

Index cards, just jot down some quotes and have them available. Try to have at least three for each type of event you can think of, bar fight, meeting the villian, running into danger, love...

Some I have used...

That is worse than a crime, it is a blunder!

If you were any taller and manly you would still be a woman. (said to male villian)

Sir, even the sheep you bedded last night was disappointed in your love making.

charisma is also just the sly stare some folks can pull off.... i assume you aren't capable of rping an 18 int perfectly either...relax, roll, revel in it
