Hmmm... Depends how many books you have. You could route them through a variety of campaign settings, in that case.

Make sure that both a) The splinters cannot be destroyed.
and b) They can help find the others.

Otherwise you might end up with players taking their one splinter, incasing it in steel and dropping it in the ocean somewhere or something like that.

Happily I don't know from experience, just from reading here about 'Gather the Artifacts' plots gone horribly wrong.
