Immediate action and Contingency

Can you use an immediate action to trigger a contingency?

I don't see why not. But the contingency would need to be set up to trigger on a particular immediate action--"when I cast arrow mind"--or some such trigger. This is a much more restrictive trigger than what's possible with free actions such as "when I say "Holy Cow!" in celestial" since it precludes a useful quickened spell in the following round. It is also more restrictive than a reactive trigger such as "When I am grappled" or "when I am attacked with a spell or weapon." The reactive trigger can occur when you are flatfooted, doesn't cost an action, and is much less susceptible to conditions negating it (for instance, the "when I cast arrow mind" contingency would be useless if you were grappled or silenced while flatfooted.)

Ah, there's the thing. What is the difference between casting Featherfall - which has a verbal component - and just saying the verbal component for featherfall? I don't see how the second one could possibly be any slower than the first.

How about this as a trigger: "when I utter the verbal component for Featherfall, without actually casting the spell."

Well, the rules say that you can talk even when it´s not your turn, so you could trigger Contingency to a certain word and make a virtual immediate spell (it´s even better than immediate, since it´s a free action).

The downside is that you must decide all th details of the contingencied spell when you cast Contingency, so, for example, you wouldn´t want to trigger Fireball to it, since you can´t really aim the spell. It works better with spell you´d cast on yourself.

Interesting... anyone have a list of spells with really long casting times, but would have been useful as an immediate action?

Well, these don't have extremely long casting times, but teleport or antimagic field would both be nice to have when you're getting low on hit points or being mind controlled.

And in an extreme case, it would be interesting to see contingency cast with Create Undead, with the trigger being your own death. Nice way for a necromancer to get one last attack at the party... as they come forward to search his body for what they need, he arises as a Mohrg or Mummy and attacks (that's a stretch, but still).

'Three days after I die, cast Raise Dead on me'?

I'd let people get away with all sorts of weird contingencies. One was, "When I should be speaking but there is no sound, cast dispel magic on the silence."
