Implications of Dragon being sold [2002 Thread]

Well I think you konw that you probably won't see any major changes for 4-6 months as they probably have storyboards or whatever magazine arcs are called. I mean yeah they'll have a special editorial answers some of these questions but in terms of actual changes I'm not so sure. From what I seen and heard the selling of the rights to the magazines was done mainly and quite rightly for pure buisness decisions. We are lucky not only that they had a buyer but ones that care about DnD. I think(hope) that Dragon goes back to what it was in the early '80's when I first picked it up. Those were the years of modules in issues and the Point of View of the Demi-humans series. The emphesis was on "crunchy bits" as some call it. I don't care if it's Greyhawk(which I love) or FR or DL or even some good d20 stuff like freeport as long as I get some for my sub I'm a happy camper:D Dungeon I hope continues with the modules and I too hope that my RPGA membership that purchased extra issues is honored, tho' I think it will. If I have one complaint it is that I DON"T want Sci-Fi stuff in it. Ares(in the '80's) was at the end and so I skipped the 16 pages to get to the comics(and hey that could be a whole new thread-REturn of classic comics?)

Seems like the Open Gaming License would put the kibosh on any FR or Greyhawk material appearing in Dragon...

In another thread, Jesse Decker said:

"Living Greyhawk Journal will still appear in the pages of Dragon, and Polyhedron will still be partnered with Dungeon."

Also, the text of the press release said:

"Leading game developer Wizards of the Coast, Inc., a subsidiary of Hasbro, Inc. (NYSE: HAS), today announced they have reached an exclusive publishing agreement with Paizo Publishing, LLC to produce top hobby industry magazines Dungeon Adventures and Dragon."

So -- while I know they have all the employees that produced the magazines -- it's not clear from the release that they actually own the magazines or are just licensed to publish them. Can anybody clarify this?

Licensed to publish them. A license that could and has been revoked.

Just a little perspective from 2002.

It now appears to be official that the periodicals division - which produces Dragon, Dungeon and other magazines - have been sold off.

Let us table - for the moment - discussion of Stevens and the others who have acquired the magazines or whether or not this is a good idea.

What does this mean in terms of the settings that can be discussed in articles in these magazines?

For example, what will happen to Ed Greenwood's frequent columns about the Forgotten Realms?

What about any article that mention Grayhawk?

Will these stop (and thus all articles become generic)?
What?

Paizo selling off a portion of their division?

This post is from 2002. Not familiar with the history myself, but it seems that this is talking about when Paizo picked up Dungeon and Dragon from WotC.

I was hoping someone could locate some of these old threads. Just to compare the responses from people then to now, and gauge the general change in mood/attitude since. Interesting.
