Improved feint?

BVB

First Post
I've read mention of an "improved feint" (ala bluff skill?) in upcoming v3.5 somewhere on this board recently, but I can't remember how extensive the information was. Will it be a feat, or only available in a prestige class (the duelist)? And how effective will it make feinting as a combat tactic?

From the Compiled Revisions Thread:

q. Improved Feint: Allows a feint (as per bluff) as a Move action.

It's in the Combat Expertise feat chain, and thus is available to everyone with Int 13+ (don't know if there are any other preerquisites, though). It improves on the basic bluff feint (which is a standard action), which allows a rogue to feint and sneak attack a target in the same round (it currently takes two consecutive rounds).

It's for sensitive characters. When confronted with anything shocking or disturbing, they're really good at keeling over into unconscious for 1d6 rounds.

Given that normal faint is only good for 1d2 rounds and requires a Will save, this improved version is way too overpowered and needs to be nerfed. Just another example of how 3.5 is broken. :p

If they haven't changed the mechanics for Feinting in combat, and it's still based on an opposed Bluff vs. Sense Motive roll, it's going to be very effective.

It'll take seeing it in play to tell whether it's going to be more effective than flanking - the fact that you won't be able to feint and make multiple attacks definitely helps to balance it. On the other hand, it's generally easier for most enemies to position themselves in ways that make flanking difficult than it is for them to beat the Rogue's Bluff check, and feinting doesn't require the Rogue to take as many risks as flanking does. But then again, it's going to have prerequisites, so who knows...

Feint is currently a standard action which means if you use it, you can't attack but you can move.

Improved Feint means that you can use Feint as your move action and attack as your attack action. However, you can't use a full attack as you are now considered to be 'moving'.

I can see both having their use.

I imagine a 1st level human, 13+ Int rogues with Combat Expertise and Improved Feint will be a very effective and interesting build. If you start a round next to an opponent one opposed check later and you add 1d6 to your damage.

I don't think this is a bad change at all, it makes feinting a useful action in combat. With feinting as a standard action, much of the time an enemy would be dead, or have moved, or something else a round later when you came to act.

nikolai.
