Improved Skeletal Servant

You could make it a spell stiched undead, giving it some spellcasting abilities, DR +2 profane bonus to saves, +2 turn resistance, SR.

I think I found a solution. I'm going to upgrade him into a skeleton from the eberon book, the intelligent skeleton. Thus, he gains feats, 2 hd, and skill points. I'll have to check, I think they advance by level - but the servant just gains HD, natural AC, STR, and DEX.

I thought about spell stitched, but as a skeleton, he has 0 int, 1 cha, and 10 wis.

bossloki - I've got to limit the improvement to a feat, mirrororing the improved familiar model. The spells, while cool, wouldn't be allowed by my DM.

It's worth noting that while you start out with a standard human warrior skeleton, there is nothing by the RAW that says you can't replace it with something better (like the skeleton of a half-dragon warrior). It is just restricted by hit dice. Even if your DM restricts you to a commoner warrior you have other options depending on how evil you are. Find the town strong man and give him a tome/manual that improves ability scores then kill him and animate his remains.
Or use the polymorph any object spell to morph your servant into a dragon or giant skeleton (for a stronger servant). Or into a faster race for a faster servant.

When I used the skeletal servant option, I talked my DM into letting me use a hyena for the base creature. It was a lot of fun and extremely usefull. The biggest problem I had was that Leroy(my servant) kept getting turned up until about 15th level.

If you have Libris Mortis anything in the Corpsecrafter series of feats is usefull.

Bother missed that option, ah well my Necromancer got killed last night, his servant did indeed get turned before striking a single blow, while his devouerer did better. The PC monk strangled him, and as he lay dying he commended his soul to the god of death, and asked that his body be destroyed. (he wants to come back as something incorpreral.)

What do you do with the body of a necromancer, far from any holy ground?

just a little side note, when you mentions that your skelly had a +1 b-sword, i assume you were reffering to a broadsword. a skeleton loses all feats when raised frmo the dead, and thus couldnt wield a bastard sword with the shield mentioned. just a thought. other than that, i would have just gone with feats from LM. if you are a neccy, they help all around.

Oops! Changed it to a long sword - thank you!
